Rattle can or powder coat

Recommended Posts

Mikefeds

Looking for suggestions on refinishing tire rims on my two horses......Initial thought was to sand, prime with etching primer, and paint with the recommended Rustoleum Ivory.    Would media blast and powdercoat be better alternative if price is reasonable.

one set is getting "new shoes" so rims will be free of rubber !

anyone have theirs blasted and how much ?

TIA and Merry Christmas to my Red Square Family !

Hard to beat sandblasting but there are other ways of removing rust.  AND!  Is this a worker or show piece?

Depends if you can find someone that sandblasts, by me it's next to impossible and very expensive, plus the one dude I wouldn't trust with parts that can't be replaced

@Horse Newbie, how much did it set you back for blasting and powdercoating your 520 wheels?

I’ve done both sand blast and  etch primer spray paint and also brace coat clear a set too but still don’t look as good as the set I had powder coated this summer. The powder coat was $75 an was done in 2 days.

@Mikefeds

2 front rims=  $100

2 back rims=  $150

4 hub caps=     $40

Wheels- gloss white powder coat

Hub caps- shiny chrome powder coat, they didn't have stainless steel like you showed, but I think the shiny chrome will be nice if it matches their sample

Supposed to pick them up Monday...

I choosed also after an Tyre loosening Air to replace them.

While Rubber went off, i decide to let them sandblast and powdercoat in Alu Silver like the Front Rims are.

Oh you definitely will...but probably not until I paint the "horse emblem " in the middle, and the black circle like yours...by the way

Do you know where I could possibly get my hands on the clips that hold the hub caps on the wheels ?

Man that silver looks good...I had a hard time deciding whether to go back with silver or white...finally decided on white mainly because of other guys tractors I've seen on Red Square.

Rusty Tinsnips

I picked up a small 40lb sand blaster from the harbor store for under $100. Already paid for itself doing one set of wheels.

Be careful not to breathe any of the sand dust...not good for you...

I believe that it is just as important to paint the inside of the rims as it is to paint the outside as most of the time they rust from the inside. So I would remove the tires for either one of your pant choices. :twocents-twocents:

@DennisThorton.... they both are workers.  I'm going to reach out to a place about 15 minutes from me to get a price first.

Thanks for all the input.  My guess is powder coat isn't going to have ivory or linen white,  guessing gloss white is my best option if I go the powder route....

I'd wire brush loose rust and paint, featheredge the remaining paint then Rustoleum 769 and paint.  Speed the savings somewhere else and smile.

I finally decided on blasting and powder coating for 2 reasons

1.  Getting down to paintable surface was a bear even with wire brushing and 80 grit sandpaper. Then feathering the edges was a task.

2.  I figured with rattle can, as the tires were remounted the rattle can finish would scratch off a lot easier around the edge of rim than powder coating. I was going for a finish that would last a while.

Just my reasoning...

So we have the same decision.

The bad was, the Company called me today about an hour ago,

because of lockdown they shut down the System, but missed to finalize my Rims as promised.😎

i will get it in KW 2 finalized...

oh, thanks for that Service..🤪
