1990Onan520-H 15 #1 Posted December 15, 2020 (edited) Hi all it's that time of year again and as always I'm late preparing for winter. Of course we have a massive storm coming tomorrow and I just today got my 2-Stage blower mounted that I bought used so have no history on it. This is really my first year truly using it and I just had a few questions. First is how do I go about checking gear oil levels? I see two boxes, but do not see a fill plug or anything of the like. Just what looks like drain plugs. I can assume the one on the front of the blower is maybe a fill plug and I fill halfway? But the rear box only has a plug all the way down on the box, so I'm not sure how to fill this one unless the fill plug is burred under all the shields. Pics attached for reference to the boxes. Second question is on the lift push arm, there is a spring hole and a spring, but I'm not sure I really need it or where it is supposed to attach. Any help is appreciated. lynnmor 7,302 #6 Posted December 16, 2020 Hopefully the manual above will show the spring hooked to the hole on the bar and the round frame member. The front gearbox is filled with 90W gear oil by taking the plug out and filling till it overflows with the blower in its normal operating position. The rear gearbox is a Wheel Horse secret. Don't forget to adjust the chain slack and oil it. There is a grease fitting on the bearing as well. peter lena 8,583 #9 Posted December 16, 2020 1990ONAN520-H, bought and sold a 2 stage this past summer , did a complete operational service on it first . LUBRICATION IS VITAL , FOR OPERATIONAL MOVEMENT POINTS, all the surface rust on the auger area can easily be stopped with aerosol spray lubricant , also great to cloth rub down entire unit , the rear gear box drive chain , adjust and use CHAIN AND CABLE SPRAY IN IT , FOR EASY RUNNING. I detailed every movement point with lubricant , and slight adjustment , till it moved with ease. when I ran and checked gear boxes . I used lighter oil to top off , and test run, they both " burped out " grease and oil , just slowly detailed every movement point , added washers and lube made it all run with ease, another rusted area , was the chute angle turn rod/gear area , solid with rust and binding , aerosol and grease , opened it up , detailing the turn rod ,made it work with ease. the guy that bought it , really liked how everything worked with ease , not difficult , just go to each point and ensure its smooth function , pete 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

1990Onan520-H 15 #11 Posted December 16, 2020 Thanks all for the help. I think I got everything squared away just in time here. Was able to get the manual to open on another computer and run through it all. Auger bearings are a bit loose and should probably be changed the end of this season, but everything else is greased and adjusted. Also found my front gearbox is apparently filled with grease and not oil. Guessing maybe it had a leak at some point and someone "solved" that problem. From my research though it should be ok.
