rjg854 11,392 #1 Posted December 15, 2020 I recently bought a supposedly rebuilt transmission for the 854. I installed it and it all works, except that all but 3rd gear has lots of noise. So my question is what would cause this, and then what is the solution. I know it's going to have to be opened up. I'm thinking something must be in the wrong spot. Before you drop that transmission, put it on blocks and use a long screw driver (like a stethoscope) and touch it in various areas especially where the bearings are. There is a reason that the other guy "rebuilt" the trans. He may not have noticed or didn't know that he had a bad bearing. Odds are that is what is making the noise. 3rd gear goes fast enough that it may not make noise?? Those are the transmissions that I like to open...tells me a lot about the other guy. 953 nut 55,389 #4 Posted December 15, 2020 Randy, my guess would be that the 3522 gear (input shaft) has a needle bearing inside of it that feels the pressure when in any gear other than third. When you are in third gear the 3522 gear and the 3523 gear are made up and the shaft is rotating at the same speed as the gears so the bearing has no load applied to it. If this is what the problem is, it puts me in a good starting direction. I've never opened a transmission, so as Mike mentioned, when I officially retire, this would be a good project.
