Recommended Posts

Brewer229

Hello,

New here, My question is I have one of those uni drive 2988185 it is. So it has very little oil in the case maybe a tad of moisture also but when i put in any gear it seems to go the same speed although all the gear seem to be working and falling into place any info I would appreciate on what steps to make or do from there? Oh when I get it to going it is very slow.

Thanks! Brew.

Welcome to the forum.

The 2988185 is a Uni-Drive transmission patent number.

What is the model number and serial number of your tractor? Id plate or decal may be up under the dash, below the front of the seat or under the left side of the seat.

Sounds like you have it in low range to me. I think getting clean gear oil in the gear box should be a priority before you damage if, they are tough and durable but clean fresh oil is a must

Ok Thanks!,

So will that help it get moving faster that its just dry inside and not enough oil?

I seen that 90 wt. is ok? Gear lube?

I agree that it sounds like you have have it in the LOW RANGE gears.  To get the small shift lever into the higher range, sometimes you have to 'double clutch' to get it to go in.    If it's stuck because the oil has dried out on the shift rods,  you might drain all of the oil, and then run some kerosene and Marvel Mystery Oil in it for about 10 minutes with the rear wheels off of the ground to loosen things a bit, then drain and refill with oil.  Worth a try before you get involved in taking the trans apart.

    Good luck,  Jim

Sounds like you have a early eighties C-85/81

This should be the manual

Transmission Gear Uni-Drive 1-1/8" Axles.pdf - Manual - RedSquare Wheel Horse Forum

Other manuals on that tractor here as well. Sounds lik it might be in low range if it goes slow...... Jim beat me to that low range

When you drain the fluids from the trans, be sure to jack up the front of the tractor so that the fluid will get over the hump in the middle of the trans case.

Do not force the hi/low shifter.  You can bend or break the fork.  Let the lubrication do it's thing and just wiggle that shifter once in a while.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

With the information you have gotten you should be on your way to a bit faster seat time.

BREWER, agree with others above , your shift boot is probably torn/ripped allowing moisture entry , I  would take advantage of that and add some kerosene or atf fluid at the hole area , realize what you are trying to do is to enhance the LUBRICATION SPRAY inside the trans to free up and flush out the crud. this will probably take a couple of flushes , that top fresh fluid entry will help the gear sliders , start to work , DO NOT FORCE THE SHIFTERS , as you move it , stop and gently try to move either shifter . done this a number of times , best way is to use  ROAD TIME IF POSSIBLE , that will spray fresh oil everywhere in the transmission . if it starts to free up , use every gear and hi and low range to establish oil slide and clean up . I  would favor lighter oils during this transition , and heating up period , that's your flushing gain . look at oil on dip stick , regularly to verify its color change , showing you a gain on the rusty milky mess in there . probably a couple of flushes , will do it , put time on the oil , let us know , pete

Hi Peter,

Im just getting back to this Toro here today, I have been draining out the water and sludge , What type oil should I use and the weight?

Im going to raise it up after I get it drained and let the transmission do its thing while running once i put fresh oils in..

The low high shifter actually seem to be working but it just wont change or catch into the high for some reason.

hope this what I do here helps it free up.

Thanks again!

Brew.

BREWER229, as I said above use kerosene or atf fluid ,  Both clean and break down old dirty oils , remember that is what you want to do , this is not a one and done quick fix. do you have a cul de sac  or little used road near by ?  road time , heating up the oil and stopping to use all gears and range changes is what frees the problem up . note what your fresh oil fill looks like , because you want it to turn filthy looking , that's cleaning and making it better. my flushing's usually take about two times , let us know how it works out , pete

It should feel like you are sliding a gear on a shaft...from one gear to another.  Let us know what happens and if the horse moves, do you think you are in hi or low.  You will know if you are in low.  It is like just crawling along.

When you are in there, clean everything really well, makes sure the bearing oil passages are clean.

I grease up the selectors

Good luck
