1980 C165 8 speed transmission

First time here and a pretty simple question that I’m sure I’m not going to like the answer to! Picked this up cheap, saw that it had good bones with five implements for $50.00. My question is with belt off the drive pulley it spins freely in every gear shift location, am I missing something or is that a take it out, open it up and figure it out situation? Again 8 speed on a C165

Check that input shaft spins with the pulley. Then check th hubs and see if they are still secured to the axle. Make sure the high/low lever is in either range.

Those are about the only things to check before you would open up the transmission. Others will be along to welcome and advice.

JAN, before opening that up , how about a lubrication verification ?  If   you can bench run that  and possibly dump out filthy milky oil , and refill to see if there is a change for the better , why not ?  just my thoughts , pete

I had to replace the input pulley so I know it’s not an issue and I will drain and refill tranny for shifts and giggles, and hope for the best! The hubs are spinning in opposite directions so that’s a good sign with no grinding!

A part that is missing is a short shaft at the outside of the PTO pulley, while cleaning that pulley I found a c clip ring on the grease in the inside. Is that part available or will I have to have one machined? If it’s available... Where? You guys are great!!

Rethinking the oil drain and refill attempt, if nothing is turning internally in the transmission what good will it do?

It won't if you have a broke hi/lo range gear. Pete is our resident lube expert  likes to keep us on our toes about proper horse lubrication is all.

The pulley should be affixed to the shaft with a Woodruff key and a set-screw. Just sayin'....

It sounds to me like you may have a broken hi/lo shifter mechanism. It is a weak spot in those trannys. If it broke and you are in-between hi and lo, you will not go.

Welcome to the forum.

Click on the picture in the link for tractor info

We do not have a 1980 operator manual but here is the 1981

The pto shaft changed over the years. The latest type had 2 retaining rings - one each side of the bearing. Get 2 new retaining rings as well. If you look at a ring they are stamped so one side has rounded edges and the other side has sharp edges. Install them with the rounded sides facing the bearing. The sharp sides lock into the grooves in the shaft better so the applied pto pressure does not force them out. That is perhaps what happened to the old one.

Adding the second ring allowed the pto linkage to pull the hub away from the pressure plate.

Here is a link to one dealer with fair prices. It is for a 1990 model that used the new design.

An older manual that has good service info

Kinda where I was going ... i have had it happen. That's a shattered hi/lo gear.

Just for checking pull the shifter to inspect the ball on the end.

I wouldn't put power to the tranny until i figure out whats goin on.

One way to verify a broken hi/low mechanism...put tractor into one of the forward gears.  Now, with rear end on blocks, try to turn one of the tires in the forward direction.  It will not be easy, you will be turning all of the inside gears from the opposite direction.  Notice the brake shaft turning...now see if the input shaft is turning.  If the input shaft is not turning, then your hi/low is either in neutral or the mechanism is broken.  Time to open up transmission.  Check out this thread.  :occasion-xmas:
