Any way I read a lot and the 121 I’m restoring had bad axle seals and break shaft seal. I watched a video on YouTube by VinsRj and said why not! WheelhorseBob 1,549 #4 Posted December 12, 2020 Some may have noticed that one 1533 bearing stayed on the axle. It seems to be in good shape as does the other. WHX?? 49,157 #5 Posted December 12, 2020 I always put them back in the ways they came out just because of the wear pattern Bob. Was schooled to do this with tapered bearings so it stuck. Prolly doesn't matter a whole lot on the 1533's tho. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

WheelhorseBob 1,549 #7 Posted December 12, 2020 Ok so I tore into it a bit further. My right hand axle was very loose in the differential and the end of the pinion hub was chewed up, if that’s what it’s called. See pics. Although it was very loose I found no damage to anything. Almost looks like a poor casting. Anyway this area really doesn’t support the axle in any was, at least to my way of thinking the axle is supported by the pinion gears on one end and the Torrington bearing in the other. Thoughts? WheelhorseBob 1,549 #10 Posted December 13, 2020 Well I’ve looked at this every way to Sunday and as ugly as it looks I really don’t think it is a functional problem. The ugly bore is not meant to support the axle in any way. The axle on the wheel end is supported by the Torrington bearing and the diff end is supported by the pinion gears. The pinion housing is supported by the 1533 bearing which is good. I think she’s fugly, but functional. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

stevasaurus 22,863 #12 Posted December 13, 2020 I see nothing wrong with your axle or anything else in your transmission. Your thinking is correct for how the axle is supported. I would put the 1533 back in the housing though. Interestingly enough I was researching a new axle end cap, and low and behold they are still available from Toro. I won’t bore you with the price but suffice to say you could buy a 100 hr 520H for what it would cost to rebuild a 8 speed with new parts!
