54” Early 1960s A Frame Plow?

I picked up a 54” plow today, it’s a early/mid 1960s A frame style. I thought it was a 42” when I went to look at it. I never knew they made an early A frame 54” not sure if this will fit my 753? Looks like the lift arm comes up in a different spot in relation to the rear mount. Any ideas what’s this go to or if it will work?

The interchange list in the Implements and Attachments section only list a 42" blade for a 753.  

 

That is not to say that the 54" blade can't be made to fit with some 'adjustments' (flame wrench, suicide wheel, big hammer, spark wand, etc.).

 

Any idea what the blade was used on by the PO?

 

Disclaimer - I don't own a dozer blade, and my Horse is newer than yours, so this is just an educated guess.  Somebody how knows will probably be along soon.

Garry's got you fixed right up there. 

Certainly isn't a common plow. 

Someone in the 953/1054 crowd would be pretty happy to have that.

You should verify that the A-frame is for a 953 or 1054 because the 54" blade will also fit the short tractor frame and long tractor frame A-frames.

The only difference between the 42" blades and 54" blades is the width.

Later on when the blades came in 2 packages as a basic unit and a completeing kit you ordered the blade and an A-frame kit to suit the application.

42" blade was standard and the 54" was an option for the 16hp tractors.

Hopefully some one familiar with the 953 and 1054 blades can identify the A-frame you have.

I was wrong.

The 54" blade shows up for the left over GT-14's in 1973.

In 1974 the blade was increased to 56" and listed as an option for the 16hp models.

The blade where it mounts to the A frame looks exactly the same as my 42”. The blade looks like a direct bolt on to the short frame. The plow frame itself the lift arm is in a different location so the long frame doesn’t look look like it will work on my 753. I was really just looking to replace my plow with a nicer blade and frame, didn’t expect this lol.

Chances are the 54" snow/dozer blade would be a bit too much for a 753. You could adapt the lift point to work but the added width and length would be a bit hard to maneuver and with the blade at an angel it would tend to push the front of the 753 sideways. The 953/1054/GT-14 are longer and much heavier in the front than the 753. You may want to list it for trade for a 42" short frame unit.   https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/classifieds/trade/

I'm still fairly new at this whole Wheelhorse game but I've never seen a C Series with a 56. 

 

Would that have been an option only on the D series?

I would bolt the blade to the short frame plow frame to eliminate the longer length. Think front frame weights and aired down front tires would eliminate front end sliding?

I have 110 lb of fluid weight on the front of the Cinnamon Horse and also a much larger engine with a 48-in plow and that will slide sideways if I push it much. 

 

Your best bet would be to get as much weight up there as you possibly can along with roller chains wrapped around the front tires so you have steel beams effectively doing the steering.

 

Fluid filled tires. Front wheel weights if possible. A lot of weight hanging off the frame...

 

 

With me sitting on it my tractor weighs over 1,350 lb and I occasionally wish it was heavier.

Got the front wheel weights, I’d have to fab up a bracket to mount some front end weights to. 
 

I think I would also add 1/4 angle iron across my rear frame mount (across the four bolts that mount to the uni drive). That plate isn’t cracked at all but I would think that it would prevent it from cracking.

 

I also read about some guys doing plow frame stabilizaters, to prevent sideway torsion

Both of those are great ideas.

 

I can't remember how to search for it but there's a thread that talks about reinforcing that rear frame area and I'll post it when I can find it if somebody else doesn't beat me to it. 

@pfrederi Paul and @WVHillbilly520H Jeff both have good ideas about front stabilizer setups. 

I'll be installing one on my Cinnamon Horse soon.

Your blade is from a 1964 model BD-543 dozer assembly identified by the A-65418 serial number.

 

The A-frame is not necessarily from that assembly as I explained earlier. If it is it may be too wide for your tractor.

 

You will not find the serial number listed anywhere but here because Wheel Horse never published serial numbers. That is why we record serials we see and how we have learned this one is a 1964 model even though the BD-543 model number was used for the 1963 to 1965 model years.

Good info, when did they stop making long A frame plows? The plow frame I have does look different than the one in that manual

Here is a list of the long frame plows. 953, 1054 and D-Series are often called large frames.

 

I am quite sure your frame is 1968 or older because the frame is a full A-shape. The rear axle hitch for this frame mounts ahead of the rear axle.

When the frame changed in 1968 they went to a frame that has about 2 feet of the rear rails parallel to each other. This rear hitch is mounted under the rear axle.
