NAPA Platinum Oil Filters?

Recommended Posts

Stepney

When I first got my '85 Ford a few years ago, it arrived with 'no oil leaks'.. indeed, it was both dry and seized..

After breaking her loose and a few flushes, I got tired of crawling under every hundred miles or so .. and frankly.. the cheap oil was almost as much as letting the Stooges do it.

So I brought it on down to the local Jiffy for the 100-mile metallic-filing flush..

I didnt care about the oil, I was changing it once again soon anyway.

They did the job fine.. sure..
Then they came around the corner and told me the air cleaner was dirty ..

Heh funny thing I never even had the cover off .. but I knew the shape..

And they came walking up to me with a Subaru square cartridge air cleaner..

For my 85 Ford .. with a 16" round air cleaner and a 1bbl carb..

First and last time was pre-planned at first .. cemented after that.

I wish I could remember the investigation show that I watched. I believe it was in Ontario. Regardless, the big issue was that the employees were financially rewarded for upselling everything. In the very worst cases caught on camera they didn't even do the work. And look out if your wife or daughter sets foot in one of these places, they will try to sell them the kitchen sink. If I remember correctly this show had four cars all serviced by a reputable garage and then sent two guys and two gals to a 10 minute lube joint. The difference between the treatment of the women and men was amazing. I should also say there may be fine reputable places doing this work but I don't know which ones are and which ones aren't. If for whatever reason you don't want to or can't change your oil, I'd find a local reputable mechanic to do it.

good vid @WHX24, that guy does a pretty good job on some of his YouTube stuff.

Something I found out about NAPA filters the other day. The counter guy had up his reference stuff and made a comment that they carry two filters that will work for the application. He was pretty sharp and went a bit further. The difference was the flow rate. One had a larger media section and allowed higher flow rates. I wonder if that is true for the Kubota match up?

I know from spending the bulk of my time managing heavy industrial maintenance I have found snake oil out there. Most of the time those oil and filter guys spend a lot of time wooing the buyers into changing for money savings. The buyers can't fix a sandwich and get sucked in. When new products or manufactures came along I always ask for specification sheets and independent testing information. Started there.

I will say I did learn to not to discount things immediately. Early on we had a oil producer swing by and offer their products and said we will match your cost and provide a better product. HMMM how? This was bout the time full synthetics were taking a toe hold and they wanted in the market. Okay looked over the info and it was good. Took delivery of a pallet and put it in the most aggressive gearbox. The box had temperature sensors that reported out and graphed. Just by going to a full synthetic we dropped the average box temperature by %25. A mazing. And at rebuild the cost was %25 less. Switched over to all the boxes and the same was true. That oil really made less heat  transferred the heat much better.

the reason the quick oil change places sprouted up everywhere at one time was because there was a demand that was not being met

many dealers and service stations were unable to accommodate the demand for quick / unscheduled service including oil changes, etc

this has changed over the years

agree

many don't realize the important role oil plays in engine / engine parts operating temperature

engine can be air or liquid cooled - but both are indirect cooling sources

oil is the direct cooling source - oil helps to dissipate and transfer heat from the engine internals / parts as it is circulated through the internals and into and out of the sump (crankcase, oil pan, etc)

That's kind of a damned if you do and damned if you don't deal in auto service.  Our customer service surveys suggested that about half the women that came in wanted to be treated differently because they were a woman.  I can't tell you how many times I read "1 star, treated me just like a man" on a survey.

Well if they want to be sold a bunch of stuff they don’t need and not be treated like a man, so be it!

I think a lot of them were thinking more along the lines of they showed as much skin as they legally could and still didn't get a discount.
