Any pros or cons on the driveshaft system on the 522XI ?

I can’t find any cons...  Vehicles have drive shafts... 

Pro’s?  No belt wear, no slippage..

Cub Cadet touted shaft drive for over 50 years with their horizontal shaft engines that should say a lot right there.

And some of the better Cub models even had CV joints. All good with low maintenance.

 

Just thinking, one con; drive shaft units are more of a challenge with implements. ie. toro tiller uses two belts to change the drive belt direction, as compared to the belt driven arrangements, motor turned 90 degrees,

I've always thought the shafts were far superior to belts.  They last longer and transfer power more efficiently.

Cost more to build.

 

Bigger WHs, Bolens, Power King/Economy. Cubs, and ...

Internally in the transmission, the only difference to the other newer WH models are (as far as I can tell), that the output from the hydro unit isn't a straight sprocket, on top of another ditto on the gearbox side of things, but a bevel gear setup, to take care of the 90 deg angle. So as far as the tranny goes, the driveshaft model should be just as strong and tough as any of the belt driven units.

 

IMO, driveshaft is far superior.

 

Pros:

• longevity and very low maintenance cost
• No noisy, rattling belt idler clutch setup
• No belt slip
• Easy usage of other end of engine for pto purposes
• Less collateral damage from broken belts. IE busted fan blades etc

cons:

• You can't disengage the hydro unit, but seriously, has anyone ever used that feature? I mean, my car with an auto box don't have a just in case clutch pedal either 
• Looks. We are used to seeing the engine orientated in the side pto fashion, and to many WH folks, that might just be how a true WH should look. No matter that better is available.

 

just my  and that's why I have an xi tranny in route for my next project.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I was thinking lack of slippage could be a bad thing. I have however purchased a 522XI which will be delivered tomorrow. It will be sitting next to my 1990 520-8,and 520H. Thank you all for your time, responses and once again guidance ,

Just noticed this comment, I have mower deck and snow thrower on it. It has been heavily in use and held up well. The power steering is a nice option, Trying to locate or maybe build a fel for it. Apologize for the
