If you were worried about the rivet not being strong enough or you only had aluminum rivets that may wear....IN lieu of a rivet, you could "bolt on the bolt" with a smaller bolt. Just have to be sure the head was thin and smooth and place it to the inside with the nut on the outside.Maybe even grind the bolt head down a bit thinner.
