I "cap" the end of the bolt with a second nyloc nut set right at the end of the bolt. I have used closed end nuts but found they would break through the cap and I wouldn't notice until I ripped my pants.... Or leg. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I think it must depend entirely on the exact weights used. The ones I found on the side of the road took 7" long 1/2" bolts but they are not as thick as the ones in JohnD's photo.
