Worth? Need help. For a friend.

I have a friend who is interested in this horse. But is alittle unsure. He was asking if it was worth it but I was not too sure. So I decided to ask the elders. 

 

I think it needs a belt and battery.

Not a lot to go by, model, more pics etc. will help. Looks like it has a bad tire and possible steering issue too. Running vertical shaft ones around here can be had in running condition for less than 300.

Certainly need more pictures. Definitely agree that the vertical shaft models are more of a lawn mower and less of a garden tractor.

 

Here in Maine anything that runs and cuts is worth $300. Price goes up from there...

Value has a lot to do with location and purpose.   

1. What does your friend plan to use it for?    If it is for mowing and towing it may be fine.
2.  How much time and money will be spent in taking a look at it.  If it is close by that saves some money
3. Take a battery with you and see how it runs and drives.

In all possible seriousness I would much rather spend $2,000 or $3,000, more, doing a full proper restoration including engine rebuild on one of these older tractors than to buy a box store stamped tin pile of soon to be recycled metal.

Something if wanting to mow, I believe this model had a idler bearing assembly. These can be bad and not had for cheap! A lot of time people unload them because of that bearing. 

And certainly in you neck of the woods there are 310 and 312 8 machines for a little bit more money running.

I’d check over that front end also. That spindle pictured on the right looks bent or out of whack somehow.  It could just be the angle of the picture I suppose.

They sheetmetal machines can be used, depending on how they beeing serviced ahead - no doubt.

 

This simple pict doesn‘t tell much about the Tractor, but on my eyesight i be with Craig.
It looks to me it had a crash or worn out strongly. also the left Fender indicates that.

i see no real flat on the tyres, less air yes but i see other things.

Maybe i blamed myself because of my thoughts and eyesight, 
but as long as the steering is in a useful condition i never seen such strong disalignment.

 

It can be brought back in service with work and if Engine was down maybe with a predator Engine,
the question is is it sensefully and is it worth the Work and all the money you have to throw in.

Just a thought.

I'm far form knowledgeable about this, but that price is way too high for me.  Horses are few and far between around me and there is currently a running, driving, ready to work 520 listed for $500.

I don‘t know anything about your skills but i think your experience as it is wasn’t a problem at all, 

everything can be learned if you want to.

Here on RedSquare is an extreme experienced compendium available, so if you be able to wrench and willing to learn,

the machine depending knowledge here is extreme wide spread.

 

Because the Wheelhorses are simply in their technic and easy to maintain and fix, they also be a great Workers to learn on and with them.

As a candy, they support you on lot‘s of your garden Work.

 

Find the right Horse for you is depending on your own preference.

I choosed a 656 as my preference, because i like the simplicity and the great spreaded options i can use it for.

 

Don‘t be in a hurry to find any, your Wheelhorse will find you !

1. Factory paint, no fade also appears no cracks on steering wheel rim.

2, Patina on muffler, like new shows low hours.

3. Rear AG tires, we all love them.

4. Front turf tire on the left needs air, install tubes or better yet ribbed tires.

5. Submit an offer, seller already bombed out on $700.00.

I don't think I would jump into that tractor for that $. It looks like it has front end problems to me,I think he could do much better for that $. I don't know the market in Ky. in my area that's a fifty maybe hundred dollar project tractor or a part out. For $450 I would expect a runner with a decent deck with minor problems, belts could be another fifty plus. Keep looking there is good workers for that $

This turned out too long so hope it is not boring.

I really don't see how all the comments can come from just the picture that was shown. Maybe you found the original listing and know what the tractor is, but I do not..  Since i live in the general market area, I will say that the beginning of the season was a sellers market with $400 about the bottom with anything less than that either low HP, setting outside for years , or not a K-series.  Usually an excuse that it needs battery or carb as for why it runs, but does not run today. I really think why the market was for the sellers was those government checks came and the $600 bonus on top of regular unemployment threw extra money at the "I need a project " market. Income tax refunds hit about the same time, so even more money burning a hole in people's pockets. It was also gonna be a short shut down period to keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed so maybe some people thought that life is good and would get even better if we did our part and stayed home.Things changed from that somewhat when real unemployment set in and it became apparent that all the talk about more helicopter money went from a promise to a hope then it stopped [with now still a bit of talk about some indefinite amount at some indefinite time].  Bear with me about the economic treatise, I will get there.

  All I saw was pretty sketchy stuff early on,but then about midsummer, things went back to last year's prices with a lot more tractors showing up for sale. Then about August, I found a decent looking C-121 for 200.00 that ran, and a pair of 14 HP black hoods with one deck,extra ags ,a blade and chains for the same. The guy had a nice house, but he got a phone call while I was there and we knew there was some economic stress with him. His ask was $500 at one time, but when I told him I lived close by he lowered it without any input by me to $200.That might have been a fluke, but then a nice mostly original c-160 came in for either $3oo or $350 [I forget which] and I jumped all over it.  I couldn't believe it when I saw another a week later, and just the other day another 160 in Michigan under $400.  It looks nice, too...

  This is just the way it goes with disposable income. But that kind of income ebbs and flows. I rode old Hondas and had a ball wrenching and riding, and invariably some guy in a harley shirt would talk to me at the gas pumps about my "starter bike "  I asked him what he rode and it was a FLHCCLMNOP which was supposed to impress me, but he currentlly did not have the bike and was going to have another.  Sort of like being between jobs, I guess.

I bought way too many this year, but i would not have done so if the C-160 came in first. So I am having a ball working on four at once for now and knowing that some will need to go to a different home.  So if the tractor in question should be a $300 instead of a $400 tractor, it really does not matter. I don't always have to hear them run, either. I do take a battery and jump the starter with my thumb over the spark plug hole and so far it has worked out pretty well.

   Stay at home and turn some wrenches instead of supper and a movie. Maybe even your wife would like to see you out there so you do not make fun of her TV shows. Now, if she actually works on the horses with you........and makes you a snack.....  but we all can not be Eric
