520H won't move after oil change

Recommended Posts

@lynnmor  @WVHillbilly520H

Guys I hate to keep bothering you but I have another problem...

Since I got home and got the 520H to crank

( needs tuning) I decided to run it out in the yard a bit.( couldn't resist )

I changed the trans oil and filter ( 1994 Eaton 1100 )

10w-40

Now she wont go forward or backwards.

Any suggestions ?

She was moving fine the last time I drove her.

Never been left outside since I got it.

Thanks,  Tim

Did you check the oil level with the dipstick after you ran the engine a bit?

Take a look at the drive belt, make sure the belt tensioner is tightening the belt.

I was over at @ACman’s place the other day.  First time ever under the hood of a 520H.  A 1/2 qt. Low on the dipstick, it wouldn’t move either.  I’d say check the level again, run it a bit, shut it off, check it again again.

Hadn't thought of this for decades!  Tried to forget, but this post reminded me of my very early days as a budding mechanic.  Teenager, living at home, my ride, Mom's station wagon, needed an oil change so I volunteered.  I drained her and added 5 qts and with a big smile told my folks of my accomplishments!  Just in time because Mom had to go somewhere so I joined her as she rolled down the driveway into the cul-de-sac and just sat there, and sat there, revved the engine and still just sat there!  Obviously something new has gone wrong!  Then Dad came out and asked with a tone that washed away all the pride I had moments earlier, "Which drain plug did you pull?"  I really wasn't much of a mechanic then but I was smart enough to know why he was asking.  So there I was looking at my Mom ready to leave in a car dead in the middle of the road that I just drained the trans fluid out of.  But I did add an additional 5 qts of oil to the crankcase!  Fortunately Dad had some extra trans fluid and I was MORE than willing to add trans fluid and drain out some excess oil!  Hard to get over that so I will go back to trying to forget!  Gads I hope this has nothing to do with this post!  But I know first hand that it can happen...

I've always hope there was an easier way...

But it IS effective!  Did it once, 50 years ago and haven't repeated it!

No I did not...since I had it to the full mark cold I thought it should at least move a few feet especially with no deck or attachments running.

I will check the oil level tomorrow before I try to crank or move.

Thank yoy so very much!  And obviously I've got to save this.

Honestly, I think I should have gotten this long ago, but, no worries, there were several times just today that reminded me that I could still qualify!

@953 nut   The belt was spinning and the fan was spinning, but I'll double check it tomorrow.

I hope I didn't do her any harm...

I know the level was at the full mark before I cranked.

Do you guys think it was showing full and then when I cranked it oil pumped into the system and dropped the level in the case to where it would not move.

Somebody tell me I did not do any harm.

So. @pullstart  the hash marks at the lower end of the trans dipstick mean 1 qt. low like on a car ?

How much oil did you put back in and what filter did you use?

@DennisThornton  Hey when I first started driving I brought all my fluids out at once to top off everything...

Ended up adding power steering fluid to the brake master cylinder...

Needless to say after a few miles and pumping some of that power steering fluid into the brake system it ended up stopping my car dead in its tracks- on RR tracks...lol

Had to jump out and grab a 10 mm wrench and bleed the calipers to move the car.

Then I got to do a complete brake system overhaul.

Of course the guys at the local parts house coached me ( much like my friends on Red Square ) and I got a community college course on the workings of an automobile hydraulic brake system...been doing my own brakes since...(Oak tree you're in my way).

But I learned something !

I have yet to do that, but give me time!

Good luck!  These guys will get you and your WH back on track!

I used a NAPA Gold filter that @WVHillbilly520H told me about. I know it is a hydraulic fluid filter, and I'll confirm tomorrow.

I know I put 2 to 3 qts...I put some in, waited, checked, put a little more, waited, checked, little more, waited, checked, so I know I had it to full cold...all though it WAS hard to tell on the dipstick.

But I do believe I had the level cold well past the "add" point and definitely not overfull.

I'll check it tomorrow and hopefully it just pumped some into the lines and I can add some more if necessary.

Hope I didn't tear anything up !

You think I did by it not moving ?

I fill to the full mark and then start the engine.  I run the lift up and down and run the tractor forward and reverse, shut down and check level.  Lather, rinse and repeat as required.  I doubt that you did any harm unless you got crazy with it.

Nope did not get crazy at all...just shut her down...and I did not move the lift up or down.

And check the thread about my carb problem...got her running what I would call decent...still will need some advice to tune.

I’m not sure, but it was amazing that just a tiny bit of fluid would make it or break it!

Definitely do as Lynmoor says run the it lift handle up and down I usually hold the lever till it whines/squeals more up and down cycling several times and try the forward/backward on motion control... Usually after first start up it will hold about a pint or more in the Wix1410 filter... Recheck the level oil level.

This has been a good read for me, I'll be changing the oil in my hydro this weekend. I would have been here asking the same questions, thinking I broke something too.

@lynnmor  @WVHillbilly520H

Hey guys,

Used NAPA 1410 filter with hydro oil change

So far I have about 3 qts of 10w-40 premium motor oil in her

No action on motion lever or lift lever...

Tried adding more oil because I have only put in 3 qts.

It seems to be taking oil slower than it did at the first 1 or 2 qts. ( stands in dipstick tube, drains in slower)

I don't want to overfill.

The Eaton manual says it holds 5 qts.

Is that 5 qts of oil if you tilt the tractor or take it apart and are doing basically a dry refill ?

I figured just changing the oil and filter it would probably take 4 qts or a little more.

When I pushed lift lever I could hear what sounded like a clicking noise coming from the trans area.

The clicking noise has me a bit concerned.

What do you guys think ?

Takes time to fill you can remove a bolt in the top of the tranny to speed it up a bit.  Clicking noise pushing an Eaton is normal

I got a clicking noise rolling her back and forth which you say is normal...

So I hear a clicking noise when I operate the lift or motion control lever ?
