I'm going to put out the supposition that the pronunciation of "ism"  although generally accepted by modern society to be two syllables is actually only one if you follow the rules of grammar. 

 

In the old school way of syllable division, every syllable must have at least one vowel. A vowel could potentially be a syllable in and of itself but a consonant cannot.

 

That said, regional dialects vary so much that I think "ism"  both could and should be considered usable, although not correct, for modern pronunciation purposes.
