Gregor 4,846 #51 Posted November 27, 2020 I have another block and sump cover ordered on ebay. I'll see what they look like when they get here. I hope it works out. In the meantime, I have been cleaning up some parts and pieces. Then I did something I never do, except this time, and now I am paying for it. I took the starter apart to clean it in up, inside and out. What I always do is take a bucket load of pictures while I am disassembling something. This time I didn't. Now I'm not certain of how to put it back together. I think I have it right, but not sure. Can anyone help in some way? Thanks Greg

It is fully machinable like steel when hardened. I’d grind that crack to a bevel and fill it if that’s the only option! I wouldn't be opposed to trying that. I bet it would hold. That crack might have been here for a long time.

Gregor 4,846 #56 Posted November 27, 2020 I am probably getting ahead of my self, not knowing how my block situation is going to turn out yet, But there are some parts I would like to order for this motor, such as a new carb, possibly a new starter, governor linkage, gaskets and seals, and a couple of other things. First I have to identify exactly what this motor is. I am not certain the shroud that was on it is original to the motor. The shroud says HH60, which indicates a cast iron block. It is not, it's aluminum. The piston diameter and the rod journal on the crank indicate a 7HP motor. There are casting numbers on the crank. 168A and another, 24-0-26. There are casting numbers on the carb. 96 3C 12, another 32, and a letter B. Casting numbers on the block, 2,1A1-0,284 Maybe these numbers mean something, maybe they don't
slim67 2,735 #57 Posted November 27, 2020 I have a 654 that I got this fall with an H60 that I had hoped to rebuild but 2 head bolts are broke off by the exhaust valve. I tried heating them up but no luck so I called it and put a clone I it instead. Sad part is the Tecumseh did run after I cleaned out the carb but the plastic gears on the governor were shot. Thats what happens when you deal with old stuff. Let me know if you need any parts. Your about 8 hours away.
Gregor 4,846 #58 Posted November 28, 2020 What's your opinion. Is this a crack, or just a casting mark?

lynnmor 7,318 #60 Posted November 28, 2020 Since it appears to be raised up, I would call it a casting mark.
Gregor 4,846 #61 Posted November 29, 2020 There is an upside to this whole project. The tractor came with a Wheel Horse dump cart. Runs perfect. 1
Gregor 4,846 #62 Posted December 3, 2020 Back to the diodes. This is just one of the reasons electronics will always remain a mystery to me.Yesterday I received the new diodes I ordered. I wanted to check them out. Got my Fluke digital meter, and tested for continuity. Nothing. Zilch. Either way, no continuity. Well crap, that's not good. Just wasted my money on these. Just for sh!ts and giggles I get my $13 Walmart analog meter, check them again. Now they test good. So why does my Fluke not test them? I don't know. I'm sure it has something to do with the type of meter, and the sensitivity. It's things like this that make a person feel rally stupid.
Gregor 4,846 #63 Posted December 10, 2020 The 656 is alive, sort of. If the mailman brought me all the stuff I was suppose to receive today, It would have kept me busy for a week. He brought one lousy Christmas card. Then about 4 pm. the UPS driver delivered my new vise, and the 6.5 hp. Predator motor I ordered from HF. With a little back yard engineering, my cheapo, but trusty, HF welder, I made a mount for it, with parts on hand. Not one trip to the store. That has to be a record for me. I didn't spend a lot of time making it real purdy, as I hope when I am done with the 7hp. Tecumseh, it;s gonna run, and go back on the tractor. The original belt went back on, as well as the belt guard bolted right up. I have the original Wheel Horse pulley, and a sleeve adapter to make it work, but the sleeve seems awful tight. It may need a little attention. The pulley that's on it I bought last week, along with a slightly larger one, I may try later. Filled the motor with oil, some gas, and it started on the second pull. Tomorrow I will put the belt back on, and see if this thing will go under it's own power. I have no reason to think it won't, but I have been surprised before. The hood will not fit at this point, but I m not going to go chopping on it just yet. If this motor has to stay on, I think if I can adapt a different air breather housing, and muffler, the hood may just work.

Gregor 4,846 #65 Posted December 10, 2020 Took the 656 for a ride. My first gear driven tractor. I think I'm gonna like it. Chuggin' along, got to the end of the street, and it began to struggle, coughed a couple times and died. That's the exact moment I wish I had put more gas in it.It goes forward, backward, right, left, starts and stops. I guess this part of the build is a success. Now if I can get the little Tecumseh back together. On a side note, my wife said she is not going to wash any more of MY rags in HER washing machine. I said fine. You are not going to put YOUR car in MY garage anymore. I should get the stitches out next Tuesday.

Sounds like unfortunately for your woman your sense of humor is similar to mine. Sounds like unfortunately for you, you have about the same level of common sense as I do....
