peter lena 8,877 #1 Posted November 20, 2020 there was a request yesterday from England for plastic paint for fender , I don't see request again , but looked up the issue , turns out , there is a ( PLASIIC PAINT ADHESION PROMOTER ) that should be used after a very thorough cleaning and sanitizing of the item to be painted . with out this PROMOTER , the paint will not properly set up and cure . the video related was at a detail body shop , that specialized in plastic refinishing on car bodies . probably easy to find a related site , just use . " PLASTIC PAINT ADHESION PROMOTER " in your search request . pete 2
pacer 3,174 #2 Posted November 20, 2020 I saw that post and kept hoping someone would jump in --- I've done a good bit of painting (WH's and old cars) but never did fiber glass. I had a buddy that was constantly tinkering with a vintage 'vette' and he would often bi%%ch about working with it.
peter lena 8,877 #3 Posted November 20, 2020 pacer, that's the typical response when you are , NOT USING THE ADHESION PROMOTER , the guy at the body shop said without it , the paint will never set up and cure properly . pete
Lee1977 6,872 #4 Posted November 20, 2020 Unless your building a show tractor It would be better to replace it with a metal fender. That plastic is 35 years or so old It's not going to take much to bust it. 4

Fiber glass & plastic are two totally different animals when it comes to painting. Fiberglass can be finished the same as metal. I've painted a lot of fiber glass items - boats, truck toppers, snowmobile hoods, Vette's, truck accessories, & never had an adhesion issue. Plastics have different properties, some will take an automotive type paint with out issue. Others require adhesion promoters or a flex agent. ABS plastic like WH used on the rear fender pans would need an adhesion promoter for sure.
