squonk 41,038 #1 Posted November 18, 2020 They are tearing down an old steam plant at the campus I'm based at. They have a crane lifting a platform with a mini excavator on it with a jack hammer. Operator is in a boom with a remote control. About 100' up I took this picture during a break in the ice, snow squalls that were coming through. It was snowing heavily while I was leaving and he was still up there! 6 3

Perfectly legal as long as it's well supported and within appropriate capacities. Humans can be supported by cranes provided that a proper basket and straps is used but it's nearly never seen. 1

oldlineman 1,481 #16 Posted November 18, 2020 I have spent many days swinging in a man basket on the end of a boom. Biggest man lift if have operated in was a 125 foot man lift and that's like being on the end of a fly rod! Good times Bob

We were fitting hydraulic pipe work to 4 big double winches for lifting parts of the reactor into place. These where on top of the building 250ft up. Builders lift only went so far up, so to get to the top it was ladder work. The steel erectors had a big crawler crane with a large basket and went up in that. With the fly jib the crane was 300ft to the tip. On my first day my mate and I climb in with steel erectors. The crane operator was aware he had two new men in the basket and took the crane up to the full hight. I tell you what. That cured my fear of hights. 1 1
Stormin 9,981 #19 Posted November 18, 2020 BTW. We were equipped with hard hats and safety harnesses. Two problems there. (1) When the wind got up, we where right on the coast, hard hats would go their own way. No chin straps. (2) There was nowhere to fasten harnesses too. 1 1

Pullstart 62,800 #21 Posted November 18, 2020 I’m nowhere that high right now, but the climb to get here is fun with a backpack and gun strapped to me! Getting down is worse, after sitting in the cold for 5 hrs or so.
