New Whatz It!

This Whatz It is open to everyone except Eric in Maine.   Not that he isn’t smart enough, he is.  And not that he isn’t worthy, he certainly is.  But, he already knows what in tarnation this gizmo is used for.   

 

This item is 18” in overall length and approximately 3 3/4” in diameter at its widest point.   The rivets and bolts are all loose enough to allow the two pieces on the side to move.   It is blacksmith made and has no makers mark on it.   

 

Any guesses?   Anyone know what it’s intended purpose is?

I think I know but is missing a couple important parts. Familly used one much larger many years ago along with a team of horses.

From what I know about these, this is a complete tool.   I don’t think it was ever used with horses.

I'd guess something for cleaning the bore of a well. Used with a rope.  Similar to cleaning a chimney.

Yep.   You got it Jim!  

 

It’s called a fishing tool.  It was usually attached to the light weight sand line on a drilling rig or on a clean-out truck winch.  The bell shaped end of the fishing tool guides the device over a lost piece of pipe.  The two grippers in the pipe hold on to the pipe as you gently back haul the pipe out of the hole.  This was not an exact science and several attempts might be made until the pipe was caught by the fishing tool with sufficient “grippage” to pull it out of the bore hole. 

 

I picked it it up because these are not very common due to their purpose built (blacksmith made) nature, AND our Latrobe Sportsmen’s Association has a broken off 2” pipe section and a foot valve, about 25’ long, 60’ down our well.  I’m hoping this it the ticket to retrieving it.  May the spirits of John Wayne and Red Adair be with me when we try to haul out this piece of pipe!
