Oldskool 6,640 #1 Posted November 14, 2020 I had a link for a sicklebar mounted on the GT but I lost it. Could someone point me in the right direction? I am picking one up that was for a differant make and will be converting it over. I'm really in need of one to mow the banks of my pond. Yes there will be a build thread on this with pictures
WHNJ701 4,165 #2 Posted November 14, 2020 There was a thread about a Sears sickle bar on a round hood.

Also pulley sizes. The one I will be picking up is 4ft from a Bolens

Handy Don 12,170 #5 Posted November 14, 2020 Hi @Oldskool, My still-in-progress conversion of a made-for-Bolens Haban Flail-Mo left me with a surplus right angle gear drive that gives a 1.67:1.0 reduction (or vice versa step up). I’ve seen it used on sickles connected to transverse engines like our WHs to “bend” the PTO output. It has universal spline couplers on it now but pretty sure they come off to leave ¾” keyed shafts. I have the coupler shafts too. I planned to post it in classifieds here and on a Bolens site when I get to it. PM me if we should discuss 🙂
953 nut 55,116 #6 Posted November 15, 2020 The Haban 414 is the correct Sickle Bar for a GT-14. Here is the manual, also I copied pictures from another thread some tine ago. 1

I'm curious to know how many revolutions of the engine vs revolutions of the counter weighted wheel that the connecting rod for the cutter bar is attached to.
Handy Don 12,170 #9 Posted November 15, 2020 Hi @Oldskool. You're welcome--keep me I'm mind as your "just in case" . Looks like an interesting project--I'm not familiar with the GT14s at all so I'm ooking forward to seeing you get it hooked up and cutting! My son and I seriously considered a sickle bar before settling on the flail. We'll be cutting weeds and light brush on narrow lanes through woodlands and the front mounted flail lets not worry about needing width for the tractor plus the sickle bar. Also, we recognized that the sickle cuts the material and lays it down, where the flail essentially shreds it into mulch so it'll decompose, which we prefer.
c-series don 8,671 #10 Posted November 15, 2020 I have a sickle bar on a C-121 8-speed and the one thing I found out pretty quickly is that it likes to run slower than faster. Seems like it would shake itself apart going fast. I really have zero use for it on my property, but it was one of those attachments that I had to have. Sometimes when I see a field of tall grass I think to myself “Man I’d like to go cut that with my sickle bar!” 2 1

Sometimes when I see a field of tall grass I think to myself “Man I’d like to go cut that with my sickle bar!” I kinda figured slower was better. I'm just not sure how fast is slow enough. They look bad ass on the little tractors and I'm tired of weed whacking my pond banks. That's the only thing I'm going to use it for. Of coarse when I get it on I'm sure i will cut everything in sight at least twice 1 1

pfrederi 17,681 #14 Posted November 15, 2020 (edited) When it comes to speed consider for many many years sickle bar mowers were ground driven and pulled by horses. If you want speed get a discbine Edited November 15, 2020 by pfrederi 2
