Help with 312-8 brakes

Recommended Posts

PWL216

Hi. I'll start by saying that although I bought my first WH (220 series) in 1989, and still have it today, I don't know much about working on tractors. My issue - I recently bought a 312-8 and the problem I'm having is there are no brakes. I adjusted the brake so that the brake collar clamps down firmly on the brake disc, but the hubs keep turning. I have tried the clutch with tension on and off the pulley. No combination of brake/clutch adjustments, including having the parking brake on, makes the hub stop rotating. What could be the issue, am I missing something simple? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you testing the brake with the tractor jacked up?  The wheels will turn in opposite directions in that case.

Is the brake drum slipping on the shaft, look at the shaft while turning the drum.

It is possible that you have internal transmission damage.

:text-welcomeconfetti: The 313-8 is a great tractor and well worth working out needed maintenance issues.  don't work about not having much past experience working on tractors. There's lots of friendly help here.

Some questions to help us diagnose the problem.

Is the area around the brake covered with old oil/dirt indicating the brake shaft seal leaking and thereby the brake lining saturated with oil?

You might want to pull the brake collar off and check if the brake lining material is worn down to the metal imbedded in the lining.  If so, Maynard, one of our Vendors in the Vendor section sells brake linings.

Also check the hubs the rear tires rims mount on are not slipping on the shaft coming out of the transaxle.  if you see any movement in the hub to shaft area, there is a bolt with a locknut that should be tightened.
