Starter Pinion won't engage flywheel

Recommended Posts

jsp_333

I have a 414-8 and the starter went a couple weeks back.

I replaced the solenoid for good measure.

Had the starter motor rebuilt by a local shop.

When I turn on the engine the pinion in the starter motor spins but won't extend to engage the flywheel.

Pinion work as it should (comes extending out)  on the bench when I picked it up. They actually showed me.

Brought it home and installed it and no go.  Really baffled at this point and obviously in need of some help.

There should be a spring in there which applies some resistance to the gear.

Weak battery or bad electrical connection?

Or bad ground...

You can bench test the starter on your own with a pair of jumper cables.

I think that the rebuild wasn’t completely done.

I'm inclined to go down the bad electrical connection. Bad ground.

I've eliminated battery by bypassing that with a battery charger connected directly to the battery cables.

The starter worked correctly on the bench at the rebuild shop.

Could the solenoid be the problem even though it's brand new.  It came with a second electrical lead at the bottom.

I ran a ground wire from that to the frame of the tractor.

It won't work (spin the starter motor) otherwise. Because the solenoid is just a relay I didn't worry about it too much

Finally had to give up and order a replacement online.

After 3 return trips to the shop that rebuilt the original I now have a starter that spins in the wrong direction.

When I left the shop last week, as I mentioned, he put it on the bench and it functioned correctly.

When I got it home and installed it I discovered it actually spinning in the wrong direction.

So I reversed polarity using a battery charger using positive to ground and negative to the starter lead and it spun the armature but

wouldn't engage with the flywheel.  I don't have enough knowledge of starters  and specifically electrical knowledge to question the shops abilities.

Uncle.

Make sure your battery connections are correct. Positive wire on the correct post...etc.

Got a great auction deal on a tractor that "wouldn't start" because terminals were reversed.

Ya no that's not the issue far as I can tell.

No battery or solenoid involved - just power straight to the starter using a battery charger. Positive to the starter makes the pinion spin in the wrong direction.

The only thing I can think of is  the shop put the starter frame on backwards  reversing the polarity of the permanent magnets attached to the starter frame.

Going to check - apparently there match marks that line up the end caps with the body of the starter
