AHS 1,479 #26 Posted November 20, 2020 My sons battery operated red tractor, and my Wheelhorse B80! I changed out the transmission belt today. I felt like I used a whole bottle of never seize, on that rusty old tractor! Next for the nut to get welded onto the broken off head stud!
AHS 1,479 #27 Posted November 28, 2020 I got the broken head bolt drilled out, by Dad! (He owns a machine shop) I got a brand new head gasket, and put the head on, tightened everything up and turned on the gas and hit the choke... and she was running!! To my surprise, there was a low amount of smoke! 👍 but the tranny wouldn’t move at all (it is an 8 speed) ..rev, 1,2,3. It was in hi range. It was like it was in neutral all the time.. what I was wondering... was there any key way to that belt pulley? Or could it just be stuck somewhere between hi and lo, and just in neutral all the time? @ebinmaine, you’ve got 8 speeds, what’s your thought on this?

From there you can verify the insides should be turning. With the engine running hold the clutch in and confirm all 4 positions of the primary shifter catch a gear. Leave it in a gear and try to massage the Hi-Lo into one or the other while "riding the clutch". Don't force too hard. If it doesn't go in you get to tear down the transmission. Easy enough to do. Or jump in the car and bring it down here.
AHS 1,479 #29 Posted November 28, 2020 I stuck my 414-8 between hi and lo, and that’s what the B80 was doing, exactly! I will try what @ebinmaine said “leave it in gear and try to massage the hi/lo into one while riding the clutch.” I hope I don’t have to tear into the transmission! AHS 1,479 #30 Posted November 30, 2020 Yup! It was stuck between hi and lo, I put in into hi for the fist time, and backed it out of the shop... and then put it into lo... it worked in all 8 gears!! For dumping two quarts of water out of the tranny, it went good!! I believe I saved it just in the nick of time, for the brief amount of cold weather, that tranny would have been cracked all to pieces!! 😀👍💪

AHS 1,479 #32 Posted November 30, 2020 I believe I “have saved another Wheelhorse!” 😀👍 I’ll admit, it feels pretty darn good! The B80! 1 1

You go ahead and run that little 8 horse around the yard and set it to doing chores and you'll fall right in love with the thing.

I have for a half an hour.. to get the tranny belt broke in. There was some rust on the pulleys and a chunk of rust that I couldn’t get off! I’m amazed at how well it runs! No carb adjustments, just a carb rebuild. I picked the steepest hill on the lot, and I rode it up there, just at idle in 1/hi... and I couldn’t get it to lug down!! 😀💪
AHS 1,479 #35 Posted December 3, 2020 NOW! Time to replace that craftsman seat!! That’s all the problems! I had to take a sawzall to the first two seat bolts!! And I used a 3/8” breaker bar to remove the fenders!! Lots of never seize going back on the bolts, new bolts!! New seat going on. Along with the vacuum cleaner to clean out pine needles and all that other gunk!! I’m about ready to replace the clutch switch.. does the outside nut come off? Cause the switch is tight right in there...
ebinmaine 69,293 #36 Posted December 3, 2020 Eeeeesh. I think so??? Mine don't have safeties so I don't exactly remember....

The hydro brake switch (73 14hp💪💪) was discontented by me, that was it! My 87 414-8 was disconnected before I owned it. I want the B80 to have the correct clutch and PTO disconnect when running. Ok..so the picture, take the clutch pedal back (clutch pedal bent clockwise) and a socket on the nut?
ebinmaine 69,293 #38 Posted December 4, 2020 Correct. You may need a wrench on the inside of the switch.
AHS 1,479 #39 Posted December 5, 2020 This is the way ladies and gentlemen! The boot that supposed to be on there and the one from 1977!! I see red on the tranny, not the pine needles, grease and grime before!
ebinmaine 69,293 #40 Posted December 5, 2020 Looks like it was about due to be replaced.

It is the worst tranny I have ever layed my eyes upon! 2 quarts of water!! Healthy!! I was close to not saving it as well, keep from freezing inside that cast iron case! It works in all 8 gears!!😀👍
ebinmaine 69,293 #42 Posted December 5, 2020 You should run that for about 10 hours or so and do a diesel flush. Get more gunk out. Nice save there man!!

I ran for about 3 days... and did a diesel flush. The used 80w-90 was a bit tan color. I’ll use this oil for the winter time. It’s gonna be my plow buggy!! Now time for motor oil change! No charge from the rectifier... and my ammeter! The red wire, is not connecting. The lead sanded off and a new end crimped on the the red wire....
ebinmaine 69,293 #44 Posted December 6, 2020 Verify good proper operation of the ammeter or leave it BYPASSED. Bad ammeter will cause all kinds of grief. On the transmission fluid I'd suggest giving it a third flush /change only because it was stuck. There will be some nasty stuff floating around in there ..... To bypass it.... hook the red wire to the green one? That’s what I’m about to do! Rather than messin with it in 5 degrees!😀

ebinmaine 69,293 #47 Posted December 7, 2020 Provided your ignition switch is working okay that's exactly correct
