8-Speed shifting woes

Recommended Posts

bds1984

On one of my machines, the transmission is acting up.  It feels like no resistance at all when shifting sometimes while other times it feels like it is stuck in two gears at once as I'll release the clutch and all I hear is belt squealing and the machine goes no where.  There is no abnormal noise coming from the transmission and the fluid is clean.  Transmissions are not my specialty so does anyone have any ideas?  Slop in the shifter?

Let's check some basics first.

Make sure that the shifter has not come loose from its dog-point set screw.

If you are able, pull the shifter out and inspect the ball on the end to see if it is broken off.

A normal one should look like this.

Looking down into the hole, the shift rails should be lined up like this when in neutral.

I will let some of our transmission experts chime in with their thoughts, but check the easy stuff first.

Pullstart

The 8 speeds have a longer detent pin to prevent getting stuck in 2 gears... weird stuff right there.  What do you do to get it unstuck?

Thank you for the pictures, rmaynard.  I've never had to work on any WH transmission before so these were a great help.  I tightened up the screw and it feels much better now.
