detent ball pin and spring for 856 rear end

putting my 856 back together but have dilema when i took frame off rear there was no detent ball/spring and pin in the spot the pic shows they go.  do they go in from outside or are they inside and if outside ? holds them in ? the frame? dumbfounded/ brainfart ! feel stupid but can anyone help ?

They go in from outside when installing the shift rails. Procedure is in manual and @stevasaurus has video on how to.

GOOFBALL, agree with above on installation, most important is , DO NOT ROUGH HOUSE  OR  FORCE THIS SCREW IN , its a simple snug into place. is your transmission clean and fresh oil ? there are a series of operational checks and shifting that go with this. you can drive and use every gear and hi/lo range , to verify its operation . get some hours of operation on it , is oil getting dirty ? flush it out , refill and do it again , you are trying to recover this , is your clutch linkage LUBRICATED , AND FREE AND EASY WORKING ?  let us know , pete

Thanks guys !   that was what i needed, had a brain fart , she shifts and stays in gear .
