ebinmaine 67,290 #1 Posted November 5, 2020 This type of situation could occur in many different rooms or areas in or outside but let's just say for the sake of discussion that you are happily puttering away in your tractor workshop. Need arises to fetch an item from another location. You take a quick half second to find the rag or wiping cloth with the smallest quantity of grease or oil on it and wipe off your hands just a bit. Go to the location where the item is stored or resting. Whether it is 5 ft away across the hall or 700 mi away, by the time you get there you've completely forgotten why you went. Look around a little bit, maybe even open a drawer or two. Why am I here? What in the world would possess me to come into this room? Thoughts, comments, suggestions, confessions?
formariz 11,987 #2 Posted November 5, 2020 Funny you came up with that. It happens to me quite frequently. To the point that sometimes I question my sanity. It happens also driving that I find myself somewhere where I did not intend to go. I remember nothing to that point during the way. Also the other day I put the milk back inside a cabinet rather than the refrigerator.

We've also been known to get mildly frustrated for just a split second when we have two bottle type containers open and try to swap the caps unsuccessfully.
Pullstart 62,799 #5 Posted November 5, 2020 All of the above, and I’m only 35 years old! I easily loose my thought process while telling a story to a group or engaging in a direct conversation one on one. Oooh shiny syndrome! Squirrel!
8ntruck 6,991 #6 Posted November 5, 2020 Yup. Yesterday, I made three trips to the basement before I finally brought the pop up that I had originally intended to get on the first trip downstairs. 2

I'm going to deem that as acceptable based on the fact that at some point during the day you did actually carry out the task.

BAM1 40 #9 Posted November 5, 2020 If I could recoup the time spent wondering why I went there, I would be ten years younger then I I'm. It gets very frustrating making two or more trips to the same location to get a job done. I even take it to the next level while working on a project, I will set a tool down and spend several minutes looking for it in the area I'm working. Of course forgetting that I moved it to a different location and set it down there. 1

We have two workshops at home and I really do try to keep each one of them sort of stocked with stuff I might need. Wrenches, sockets, pliers, screwdrivers, stuff like that. But I could have 37 tape measures and I'm telling you right here and now I would need 38, or more. 1 1

Dozens of pencils all over the place and I am always looking for them. Of course they are always right where I left them. My father still mocks me today saying that I am the only carpenter in the world that does not know how to put a pencil on his ear. He is right but I probably would never find it there. 2

You may remember that she comes from a family full of carpenters. Mom included. They stuff them into a weave of their hair somewhere.

SPINJIM 1,981 #15 Posted November 5, 2020 My workshop is about 300 feet from my house, so when I forget what I went back to the house for, I just figure that the exercise is good for me. My wife wears a Fitbit to track her steps. I just walk back and forth a few dozen times to get my steps in every day. I'm just happy that I'm still around to be aware that I forget; some of my friends aren't.
edgro 677 #16 Posted November 5, 2020 And then when you get back to where you originally were, the tool or part you had there is nowhere to be found, and after some serious hunting with no luck and finally giving up looking out of frustration, you return back to where you were first, ans there it is. (Or wife comes in, holds it up and says "is this what you're looking for?". Nope. Never happens

Stormin 9,981 #18 Posted November 5, 2020 (edited) I was taught to put things back where I found them, or else. So it's very rare I can't find anything in the workshop. In the house! Now that's something else. According to S.W.M.B.O. I'm supposed to know where SHE'S put things away somewhere safe. I do have problems remembering peoples and places names sometimes. 8ntruck 6,991 #23 Posted November 5, 2020 When I first started as an engineer, there was an experienced semi-retired engineer th sat had a work shop n the product engineering building where hevwoukl tinker on various projects. He had a theory that disappearing tools and wrenches temporarily slipped into a fourth dimension that edge on to our three dimensions. He was known to take Polorid pictures of his bench to find the missing part or tool.

Lee1977 6,647 #25 Posted November 6, 2020 I heard It was just time, that as time moved forward everything is destroyed and replaced every second. Sometimes they would miss something might be a few seconds or a few days before it is discovered and replaced at the exact location. Some missed items are never discovered and never seen again. So get Colossus finished and bolted together before the parts start disappearing. I hear It's worse up there in the North Woods as they don't have there sharpness team work up there.
