Purchased 417-A & need advice wheel weights, trailer hitch

Recommended Posts

Bull

Hello ,

I purchased the WH 417A that I discussed with some of you on the site last week. I just have a few questions about:

1.proper size wheel weights for the 12" rear rims

2.chains for the 23X9.50X12 tires

I also want to be able to tow my wood splitter (takes 2"ball)and eventually a cart. I was wondering what some of you were using to do this since the towing tongue hole diameter is approx.5 inches.  I see that there are some adapters listed on EBAY that would bolt to the existing tongue and also raise the attachment and allow for a 2" X 3/4" shank. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also thanks for the help so far. You will probably be hearing from me a lot .

12" wheel weights are pretty much universal no matter what brand.  Chains ..get 2 link chains they ride a lot smoother.  Hitch.. ghet one from Lowell  at wheel horse parts and more.  Heavy duty and very well made..

1. Congrats!

2. Most all 12” wheel weights will fit.  I am pretty unsure of any that WON’T fit, so as long as they are for a 12” wheel, they’ll do the trick!

3.  Many people swear by the rubber chains for GT’s if you have any concern of tearing up a nice smooth driveway.  I believe real chains cannot be beat, if you have an already compromised or gravel surface.

4. Www.wheelhorsepartsandmore.com @wheelhorseman here on RedSquare offers a stout hitch system if you are not a fabricator.  Otherwise, some 3/8” carriage bolts, some tubing and some strap and you should be able to toss something together.  The advantage to a fabricated hitch is that the weight attaches to the top of the axle, instead of leveraging against the transmission case.

I'll put in a 3rd vote for Lowell.

Please don't get a "hitch extension".

Get a real hitch from wheelhorse parts and more  and be SAFE and secure.

Beside Lowell's at Wheel Horse Parts And More you could build your own. Here's mine haven't got the braces down to the original hitch but will add some before it's finished.

BULL, went over to ball hitches long ago , simply drilled out the existing hole to 3/4", also set up the ball cup receiver to what ever I regularly tow around , making hook ups quick and easy .  just my own experience , pete

Congrats!  Don't think you could go wrong if she's in good shape.

Everything the other guys have told you but I'd a bit on the chains.  The more metal on the driveway the better and V-Bar ice links are even better and about all that will work on ice besides studs. There are screw in studs for rubber tires that really work great!  But like everything, there's a compromise and if you have a really nice blacktop driveway you've got to be careful about spinning unless you want groves in your driveway.

Here's an example:
