I have watched this before. Also when he upgraded his drive screws. I believe he was still breaking parts of his drive gears even then. It still was quite an able rig. I really think the mud is quite hard on the unit

Pretty sure mud, chains and sprockets only make short videos.  But NEAT ones!

Mud = liquid sandpaper. Not the best for many things.

I know the threads and the spins per minute have to be considered but how many per side?  No idea.  And how far up the cone?  Decisions, decisions and I'll be of little or no help.  Snow only I suppose?  Or at least not mud.

@DennisThornton 6 threads per side each one goes the full length of the body of it in a full 360 degree curve. As far as how far up the cone, I'm thinking they will go to where a horizontal line across the end meets a 1/3 of the circumference.  Approx 4in. With no slippage it will travel 65in per revolution. That's about 7.5in move travel per revolution then the tires on the zero turn originally.

Obviously and knowingly you've thought about this but I always try to see what has already been done and I can see different threads per foot and some run way up the cones and other not so much.  However, I have NO idea what is best!

 

I thought the fellow who got stuck did so because he was getting no bite in the middle and very little bite at each end.  I'd think there's a choice between all-terrain and mostly snow, but you know snow isn't always just flat either.  In his case perhaps a round ball with threads would have been better when he was stuck so more of the threads reach something.

 

And how deep should the threads be?

 

I'll grab a drink and a snack and come back to see what you've decided. 

 

How many propane tanks do you have?  I've got three here if you run out.

The tractor you posted with the red screws is the drive for this whole project. I think some of the threads going up the cone are useful but I think there comes a point were the WOW factor kicks in. I'm thinking 1-1/4 blades. A good bite but not to aggressive. The design I'm going with makes most sense to me. There is alot more of the blades on the ground this way. I started with 5 tanks. That should be enough, but thanks

I'm sure what you are doing will work and I'm hoping it won't be the last and that either you will want to build another or another member will.  Hopefully that will keep me from thinking that I need one too!

I hope someone else builds one as well. I plan on adding the ends on after all the wraps are done. Aluminum screws may do it but I think a bigger dia. and length would help in the flotation department.

I thought about fiberglass. I priced it. With the economic state of the country it was'nt going to be cost effective. Virtually double compared to last years prices.

Wow!  I wonder why?  One of the most practical ways to form most any shape you want though! 

 

I mentioned that I try to search for what someone else has done and I also, like you did with the tanks, try to use something someone else has already made.  Old pontoons?  Plastic drums?  20 gallon?

That's funny!  Recently I passed by my collection of tanks and noticed a couple scuba tanks and was wondering what to do with them.

The propane tanks were closest to size. Readily available  and cheap
