lobo 22 #1 Posted October 31, 2020 I had an axle seal go out on my C161 not long ago, replaced it then had it stop running , couldn't get the push valve open, so I pulled the wheel of an supported the re-end by putting a jack stand under the hub, noticed the seal seal was leaking, does that mean the axle bearing is bad? Anyway, I was wondering if the trans axle in the C145 parts tractor I have will fit in it? really con't want to try to open the other one.

It could mean the axle bearing is bad or it could be the seal was compromised when being installed. If your axle will move up and down or front to rear that would confirm a bad bearing. @19richie66 did a thread on switching an Eaton into a GT-14 which had a Sundstrand, same principles should apply going the other way. You won't be changing axles for your application. Edited November 1, 2020 by 953 nut
oliver2-44 9,853 #3 Posted October 31, 2020 The early Cxx5 had Sundstrand tranny's and the later ones had the Eaton. If the filter is faces the back it is an Eaton, if it faces the side it is a Sundstrand.
daveoman1966 3,762 #4 Posted November 1, 2020 The C-145 with Sundstrand model 90-1173 was used in 1980. The C-161 automatics were all Sundstrand 90-1173. lobo 22 #5 Posted November 1, 2020 Thanks to everyone, now with all that being said is it possible to just switch the two rear ends, one to the other?
c-series don 8,828 #6 Posted November 1, 2020 I would say yes it should be an easy swap. I have an easy way to remember how to identify what type of transmission it is. When looking at the oil filter a Sunstrand has it on the SIDE and an Eaton has it on the END.
Lee1977 6,777 #7 Posted November 3, 2020 (edited) Changing the bearing and seal is also easy, if the hub isn't too bad to get off. Has the parts transmission be tested, or have you used it. A lot of extra work to put it in and it not work. You have to remove the transmission either way. Edited November 3, 2020 by Lee1977
lobo 22 #8 Posted November 4, 2020 The parts trans. hasn't been run a few years but worked well. Just how much work is it to put new bearings in? Do you have to open up the trans?

To change out the bearings you will need to remove the transaxle but the pump can remain in place on the tractor. Presuming the hubs and hitch pin are not rusted in place bearing and seal is reasonably easy.
