854 locked up trans.

Recommended Posts

JohnE

Guy  got an 854 with a stuck transmission for sale. Deck ,snow blade and chains 450.00. interested but not sure what I'd run into. He said he was running it back and forth and just stopped. Gear shift moves through the gears but tractor don't move and can't be pushed. About a seven hour round trip to go see. Any advice?

An 854 is a nice :wh:  but $ 200 would be strong money for an inoperable one with a blade and deck if it were right next door, $ 450 with a road trip would be too much. I would look around locally and post an ad in our classifieds.       https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/classifieds/wanted/?do=form&d=2

It does sound high for an unknown transmission issue. Are you sure it actually shifts through the gears ir is just the shifter moving? It could be a simple fix. If so the price isn't out of line. :)

Thank you guys for the welcome !  I was thinking it was on the high side. I've been keeping watch in the classifieds.

If the transmission shifts, but wont roll, sounds to me like something broke inside the trans and is locking up the gears.

Depending on the condition of the rest of the tractor, the motor, and the accessories, $450 may not be too bad of a price. Just because it was running and driving, doesnt mean it's a mint condition tractor. Could be smoking and be super crusty.

Do you have any pictures? Or just going off a description?

There are pics in the ad on craigs list Chi. The way the guy talked the tractor has been setting a couple years. He was describing the problems to me.

I looked at the photos in the ad, I see many issues with the tractor.  It looks like it's on the wrong frame??  Notice how far back the hood is.  I would pass on it unless you can get it real cheap

I noticed that. He said it was a fabricated bracket a po made for the ball hitch. I'm leaning toward passing. A long drive to go look and decide against the purchase. If it didn't have the transmission issues I'd take the trip. He was supposed to call me today but didn't. Thought I would try to get as much info and opinions on here as I could to help in my decision. I have a few wheel horses but new to the hobby. I like the looks of that model. I'm prone to collecting things!!

The guy did call and I missed it. I got back and told him I was fearful of the trans issues. Thanks for the input from you guys here.

I actually bought the tractor.  Unbeknownst to me at the beginning, but it was a good friend of mines dad who was selling the tractor.  I fixed the trans last night thanks to some posts on here.  Got it running.    The stupid gas tank is leaking tho.  Hate those things.  😡

Easy enough to fix once you have it out of the tractor.

Can we see a close up pict of that muffler please?

Looks like a solid little tractor. You're in the right place if you need any help.

This is what I used on several and it hasn't failed yet. The key is getting the tank very clean and dry inside. I screw in a nylon fitting in the outlet hole and then just pour in enough to swirl around the bottom edge. Let it dry for several days (or more) and you'll be good to go. Had to but a quart but it will probably do at least a couple hundred tanks. :)

Nothing wrong with a 2 part aluminum tank.  The gasket is enough to change, and it's aluminum they don't rust out!
