Jim Turner 42 #1 Posted October 29, 2020 I just bought this 1054 a couple days ago to restore. I have already bought a few parts on Ebay including the Hood, clutch control rod, hitch lift cable, some missing parts to the mowing deck for it but wanted to ask the group what is best way to replace this clutch assembly I did find one on Ebay but the clutch pad was down to the rivets. I know the newer clutch design like what is on the C series has a replaceable clutch disk. Considered adapting that style of clutch by cutting a slot into the end of it to match it up with the 1054 style clutch control rod. has anyone done that before? What is the best way to address this problem? Facebook.html 2
953 nut 55,223 #2 Posted October 29, 2020 (edited) Looks like a nice project you've got there. The PTO on the 953/1054 is a bit of an orphan item that you will have to hunt for. They weren't used on any other tractors and all the later models had the clutch disk bolted to the engine drive pulley. The clutch plate could be resurfaced, there are a few threads on this site about the process. This thread is about the best I can remember reading. I appreciate your response on this. could you let me know what size the two pulley's are on the outer end of your 953 clutch? I am going to study the idea of mounting a clutch assembly from something like a 1076 or Raider 10 perhaps. I just need to make sure I get the pulleys of the same diameter. Pullstart 62,852 #6 Posted October 30, 2020 I am beginning to really love the 953/1054 tractors, the more I use them! Be sure to check that wiring real good and even toss a few fuses in there.., I recently learned the hard way!
WHX?? 48,815 #7 Posted October 30, 2020 Go figure Richard to be the first to chime in and get worked up about a 953! First off Jim 2nd off don't listen to the above above as he brings nothing but junk to my place that needs a good resto. 3rd off quit looking for stuff on flea bay .... we may have everything you need here, we get to know you you often get it for shipping. Plus we have a nice wanted and for sale classifieds. Plus many other resources. 4th off I may have a good set of PTO clutch parts than I may/will never use and be willing to part with .... lemme look. Tell us more about yourself and what your intentions are with this girl. 3

That is an interesting idea; however the existing pulley is not thick enough as compared to one from the picture I provided. The drive pulleys loke like the same diameter around 3.5" however on the 1054 it uses a 3/8 inner belt for the hydraulic pump and a 1/2" belt for the drive pulley. The Raider 10 uses a 5/8" drive belt. I am liking your idea of bolting that plate to the pulley I will just have to add some steel to it. But i suspect the whole thing will add about 3/8" longer than the original clutch assembly. I am not sure how that will affect the bearings or how it mounts. Lol Thank you for the warm welcome, I Live in Lafayette, IN and I do HVACR for a living (my own small business) I have owned a GT14 for a while now. and used to have a 1054 but foolishly sold it not knowing I would learn more about it later and miss it. I am fond of the Case garden tractors as well but don't care for their long radius turns nor do I care for there front snow blades as I cannot angle the blade from the seat. but at moment I just want to use those to build an articulating machine. My intentions on this 953/1054 (thinking a 1054) not sure which one it is yet. Is to get all the pieces and parts working great then take it apart clean it up real good primer and paint. Then new tires and take it to shows. Perhaps the Portland gas engine and tractor show. I hate to see these tractors getting parted out. By the way tomorrow I am also picking up an 877. I would like to find a short frame plow for it. seen several for a long frame tractor I considering looking into modifying one to work on my 877.
WHX?? 48,815 #10 Posted October 30, 2020 (edited) HVACR? ...small world that's what I do and run a small business doing that. Lennox dealer for over 50 years. We'll have to introduce you to @squonk that's what he does or so he claims. He's somewhat of an idiot but we let him hang out 'cause he knows abit about and has alot of NAPA part numbers memorized! We all love Cases here as well as other brands. Tractor shows are right up our alley as well. An 877 is on my bucket list. I have just about every '67 model but that one. Short frame plow for one should be an easy find. I absolutely hate to see tractors get parted out too but get that some must die so others may live. I myself have gotten one good vintage tractor out of two. Currently have two 953's to make one out of. Articulating??? We want Need any help with your WH here is the place. 953's & 1054s are a definite favorite here. Nobody knows more about them than @953 nut Manuals, IPLs it's all here. Files section is amazing. Feel free to browse. Edited October 30, 2020 by WHX24

The seat frame has smooth bends on the 953 and the 1054 seat frame has dimpled bends. The serial number will nail it down for sure. Also, engine Spec. Number (46135 A is a 953; 46215 A is a 1054). The wheel weights you have are scarcer than hen's teeth, they are the WW-105 and we don't see too many of them.
squonk 41,104 #13 Posted October 30, 2020 First of all Welcome to Red Square! 2nd you managed with this post to get @WHX24's attention span to last longer than 2 minutes! Yes I do HVACR. Just got off a roof repairing a walk in freezer. (I think Jim works on dorm fridges) Used to be in charge of Absorption, Steam Fired and Natural gas fired chillers. Retiring in 8 weeks. Used to be a Napa guy so I help folks out with part numbers from time to time 1

Looks like you are correct about my tractor being a 953 serial number is 41567. That was also very interesting to know about the wheel weights. I did not see any picture of the WW-105 wheel weights online. The WW-93's do look more attractive hidden behind the wheel but perhaps don't weight as much as the WW-105's. I think I found the data plate on the engine but it looked like the engine had been repainted at some point in the past and unfortunately it appears they painted over it. Do you think the WW-105 weights were originally white as the color they are now?

He said they trimmed these John deere friction disk down to work on the 953/1054 and epoxy them to the clutch and he said it works great. I just need to find a repairable clutch. You wouldn't happen to have the part numbers for the bearings I would need to rebuild one? 1

The Deere disk is a cool idea Page 2 of the PTO manual I attached earlier has an exploded view with part numbers though they probably won't cross reference to any manufacturer numbers now. Wheel Horse used all standard off the shelf bearings and hardware so an industrial supply house should be able to match them up without any problem. Don't think any of us attached the owner manual so here it is.

I can't imagine why the guy converted that to a manual lift. It does not look like it would have much leverage to lift up anything heavy.
