Steering box lower thrust bearing

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

After a few months of using my D-180 I can say the machine is a beast!  It has plenty of power and it runs great. However, the steering wheel has always been "loose", with about 20 degrees of play.  I tried adjusting the gear lash at the bottom on the box only to find that the thrust bearing race was cracked into several pieces.  So, is there a readily available replacement I can obtain?  I did look for a part number but di not see one.

All input is appreciated!

The slack will almost certainly be from the 'cam follower' being worn (be sure it is the 9/16x18 one). but, usually the 'cage' for the lower bearings is fubar. The kit I show below will put you back right again. It does not come with the bearing 'cage' but there is a work around there. Using a thick type of grease glob it around the race with the steering shaft bearing end pointing up in a vise, this is to act as a 'glue' to hold the balls in place and gently lower the case over them.

You will also need a gasket and here again you'll have to improvise and cut your own - I use a thickish? (is that a word??) type of cardboard and cut one out.

I've done 3-4 this way and works great......... Getting the dang steering shaft/box thing off/out of the tractor is quite fun by the way.!

Thanks Pacer.  I may have miscommunicated, or I'm not understanding the above info, but the bearing race I need is the bottom one which sits inside the adjustment "cap". See picture below.

Thanks,

Dave

Ouch! I've never had that happen --- there was/is? somebody on the bay that had that and the balls available, might dig around on the bay and see. This Ross steering was used on MANY garden type tractors, JD, cub, Ford, MF. etc so spread your search for other than WH, Maybe just try Ross steering.

Yes, OUCH it is!  I just bought a set on eBay, taking a risk without a Ross part number.  It’s well worth the $17 risk!  I think the p/n is 103068.  If you have any part numbers ( General Ross box number or bearing number) please forward.  Oddly enough, I had to machine a trust bearing race/cup for a 1946 Douglas T35 (motorcycle) and it was not fun! I think it took 3 tries due to heat treating!

Thanks for your input and time Pacer!

Pacer,

Thank you so much for your time and input. I'm writing to let you know that I discovered that the John Deere Ross bearing kit # AM31924 is a match!  I bout one through HamiltonBobs Cubs.  they can be reached at (513) 582 8424.  I spoke with Matt and I must say, they have great customer service.  They are FedEx'ing the parts to me so that I can put the unit back together and regain my garage space for the vehicle that belongs there!

I will post a picture of the John Deere package I found on the internet for reference (mine is in the mail).
