Getting close to putting this RJ wheel back into paint.

Thinking I' m going to paint the whole thing, rim, spokes, hub and all.

Wondering what is the best way (product) to prep the rubber rim for paint.

Anyone else have experience doing this, willing to share here? Thanks in advance.

Is that JB Weld on the spoke ends or something else? Looks really good either way.

On my david bradley suburban the wheel is welded on, I redid it place, I dremeled out the cracks and filled with jb weld.  I scuffed the wheel real good, primed it, sprayed it Rust-Oleum gloss black and then cleared it.  No issues

Oh, I loves me some epoxy. There's a flavor for nearly every job. Nice!

When I did the steering wheel on my Raider I wet sanded the steering wheel with 600grit then washed it with a preps all solvent. Same solvent that I use for washing all parts before I paint them.

Note if you have to prime over your filler work, use a black primer. This way if the paint does eventually rub through the primer is still black giving more time.

Definitely wouldn't be "original", but I've always thought it would be cool to use that plasti-dip stuff (like you find on pliers handles).

If you filled a trough with it, you could spin the outer wheel in it and leave the metal spokes exposed. Might be kinda cool with silver spokes and a black wheel.

Is rubber, yes.

Hard though, the non squishy type. You can never get the black crap to stop coming off of it.

I've consulted with my local Paint Department and the concern we have is that the rubber does not have the same flexibility as the steel, obviously.

She and I are both thinking that if you try to put paint on the rubber it's going to chip off eventually. I don't know if there's an additive that you can put in regular paint or automotive paint that would make it more flexible.

Her best suggestion would be to combine what Richard said with the vinyl dye on the outer rim and then try to get a regular metal paint that is the closest possible color to do the rest of the wheel.

Most of the major paint manufacturers such as PPG , etc... make special cleaners and prep products for cleaning and preparing plastic and rubber. That being said, this is what I would use and I can guarantee it will hold up and stick to the rubber: Use a PPG #su4901 clean and scuff sponge on the rubber portion of the wheel, it looks like an ordinary kitchen sponge but it is soaked in a special solution to get rid of all the oils in the rubber as you scuff it. You then rinse it off and allow it to dry.  Wipe it down with PPG  #sxa103 (available in spray cans), and then spray on a coat of (again in spray cans)  PPG  #sua470LV adhesion promoter. You should then be able to put most any primer/ sealer/ paint on it that you wish.  This may be more $$$ than some people want to spend, but it will do what it's supposed to do. Painting rubber bumpers on cars 25-30 yrs ago used to be a nightmare trying to get the paint to stick, but products like these solved that problem. Good luck.

Sealed the new paint with Eastwoods Diamond Clear coat.

Certainly not perfect, but a night and day improvement over what I started with.

Going to work until a better one is found.
