953 nut 55,329 #3 Posted October 19, 2020 If it is going to be used on a Trailer Queen that never gets wet and never gets dirty you may be able to get away with the "Chrome paint". that never gets wet and never gets dirty, what fun is that?

AMC RULES 37,132 #6 Posted October 19, 2020 I've used this in the past with surprisingly good results. https://www.detailing.com/store/sm-arnold-chrome-aluminum-lacquer-12-oz-aerosol.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw8rT8BRCbARIsALWiOvTh-Kcum61LZLVIq0hDCqSTliLW-1Fnh59vrvhd0U7X6j_r-I698EsaAtzvEALw_wcB

WHNJ701 4,165 #8 Posted October 19, 2020 I don't think I ever seen chrome spray on rims that looked good. Might as well find a set of chrome caps instead

SylvanLakeWH 25,606 #10 Posted October 20, 2020 Used it in the past on some bicycle handle bars etc... not impressed with results and very hard to work with... as mentioned above it ran super easy...
Elliot Garfinkel 166 #11 Posted October 22, 2020 Thanks for the feedback it sounds like the chrome paint is really not worth the effort if when it's done and doesn't hold up I have to stop and redo,This is not a trailer queen but won't see the action you guys use it for

echris 1,425 #14 Posted October 22, 2020 I just used the regular Rust-Oleum chrome paint on the handlebars for a snow blower restore that were too far rusted to save. It's better than it used by, by a long shot but, there's good and bad. The bars looked like hell. Since I spent several hours trying to polish the chrome, the paint finish was much nicer than I expected. Which means if you want a decent finish, you'd better spend way longer than you'd like doing the prep work. They look like a slightly satin chrome. not bad overall appearance. Here's the bad, every time you touch them you get silver hands. Is that going to eventually go away? No idea. I've read about Rust-Oleums automotive chrome paint which is totally different and requires a special gloss primer. No idea if that's any better. https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/general-purpose-paints/premium-custom-chrome Here's a shot of the bars before and after:
Elliot Garfinkel 166 #15 Posted October 22, 2020 That actually doesn't look to bad the rims have lots of nooks and crannys lm not sure if I can dedicate that much prep time on a some what worker. But from your pics they look pretty good I believe the rustoleum was rated in the top ten if that means anything, not sure why color comes off wondering if a clear coat would help but the rustoleum stuff is pretty scetchy as far as clear coat and recoating in general
rmaynard 15,519 #16 Posted March 1, 2021 Just stumbled upon this thread since I am looking at solutions for "rechroming" the spokes of a steering wheel. I have never had anything that even resembled chrome when it was dry. The thing that I always look for is reflectability. In other words, how sharp is the image that you see in the reflection of the painted part? Attached is a YouTube video of a comparison of 16 different paints that all claim to be "chrome" finish. Based on his comparisons, I have opted to purchase a can of SPAZ STIX Mirror Chrome and a can of Clear Coat. I will follow-up with my results as soon as I can. 1
Lee1977 6,673 #17 Posted March 2, 2021 Argent silver wheel paint used by all the car manufactures back in the 60's and 70's. It will paint better then silver paint. Then clear over it to make it shine.
WVHillbilly520H 10,373 #18 Posted March 2, 2021 @Horse Newbie , Tim share your "chrome" powder coat brand/pics, better albeit more expensive option for "chrome" wheels.
Horse Newbie 7,075 #19 Posted March 2, 2021 (edited) Thanks @WVHillbilly520H... @Elliot Garfinkel... Here's what I done with my 1994 520H wheels and hub caps... My tractor wont be a trailer queen but it will be well taken care of... Wheels: Sandblasted and powder coat Powder coat- Hi Gloss White Polyester Manufacturer- PPG Hub Caps: Sandblasted and powder coat Powder coat- Super Chrome Manufacturer- Tiger Drylac Then I bought some red and black paint markers (Forney brand/ regular and wide tip) and trimmed the hub caps. (Stole this idea from @WVHillbilly520H) These can be bought online and some hardware stores like Ace. Here are some pics... I don't think I have any before pics of the hub caps , but they had pretty bad surface rust... I think all and all the wheels and hub caps came out nice. The pics of the hub caps on the rims don't seem to be as shiny as they were when I first brought them home...I believe I need to polish them to get my fingerprints off.
