Concerning steel tire chains, one mistake I used to always see people make was loose chains. They're nowhere near as effective and wear out much quicker.

When installing the chains, lower the rear tire pressure significantly (or just remove the valve), install the chains as tight as you can and reinflate the tires. Boom - chains won't budge! (*until you break a link and they slap your fender <_< )

NOTE: I do not know if this advice is good for rubber chains as I've never used or installed them!

There was a link somewhere in this topic thread that said to deflate tires for rubber chains as well.

The only issue that I have in our particular situation is the weights that I have are bottom frame weights from some other brand or maybe even generic. I'm 99% sure that I could use that bracket if it had a slate downward Z in it.

HORSE NEWBIE, sorry about that , I misspelled " elastic lock nut " not lick nut , this is an elastic lock nut , https://www.amazon.com/Nylon-Stainless-Steel-Elastic-Insert/dp/B084M72YC4  , just showing you the stainless version for best picture . your size will probably be in the 5/16 "  or 3/8" size , available at your local hard wear store , in the pull out drawer nut/bolt section . they are a self locking nut , I use these on my horses , pete

Lets see you particular weights and "we'll" see where to go from there. There is also the style I fabbed up and then using an old mower mule drive for front attac-a-matic.

Hey I have a tug of war between my buddy this Sunday and I need to figure out how I can add weight. He has a John Deere x300 it’s hydrostatic, 4 wheel steering so it’s kinda beefy. I want to win this. I know I have to add weight so any tips on rigging up quick and easy weights would be helpful also does anyone have any recommendations on gear ratio I should use. It’s a 3 speed and it has hi low. One more thing what would be the recommended surface to pull this. Thanks guys.

Well he really wants to win and the odds are stacked against him. Seriously though, the truck guys fill their tires with water. Quick and easy.

You could try to attach something to the rear hitch.

You could also hang stuff off of the underside of the frame.

Best bet would be fluid filling the tires but I'm not sure you'll get that done on short notice.

As for the surface. I wouldn't do it on anything but some sort of gravel.

Asphalt might be too sticky and roll one of your tractors over backwards.

My son uses a x300 seriesJD  to mow with... If one these stock unweighted Ole :wh: can't pull that green plastic and sheet metal around backwards there is definitely an issues with it period.   If you don't believe me count the lug nuts on his rear wheels vs yours lawn mower vs garden tractor no real competition.

Water will freeze if you forget about it. I'd highly recommend you use something like Rimguard which is installed commercially or if you're going to do it yourself maybe RV antifreeze.

You could at least get the dumbbells to hang under the frame somewhere forward of the rear tires
