1077 Transmission fluid and filter

Recommended Posts

metalhead0920

Hello people, new to this site. I recently purchased a wheel horse 1077. And I can not find any info about the transmission. I just want to know what to use for fluid and what type of filter it takes or at least a number to cross reference. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome;

Check the existing fluid it should be red in color.  If it is use Dex/Merc transmission fluid.  Filter is Wix51410

:text-yeahthat:Yep alot of the old horses used the same filter. The wix one is the way to go. They are the best in my opinion.

Oh, one other thing, do I fill it all the way to the top of the filler tube?

Welcome to the forum.

Here is a folder on the 1077. Click on the picture for more info.

You can click on a picture taken from the Lubrication Chart

Here is everything that comes up with a search for 1077.

There should be a dipstick as part of the cap.  It may have been lost and someone substituted a plain pipe plug. Fill it to about an inch below the top of the transmission housing

Yeah no dipstick on mine. Just a tube under the seat.

Just be aware it is possible a PO converted it to motor oil.     Do not mix oil and ATF.

Ok good to know. Those manuals are super helpful, thank you. What is a po? And why would they convert to motor oil? Is there a benefit and can you convert back?

PO is previous owner.    I believe earlier WH autos used ATF and later used motor oil.      I am not sure on the models and dates.    Both fluids work .

They can be converted, but should be flushed to remove all the fluid.       Best to stay with what you find in yours.     Red is ATF.   Amber is motor oil.

Good advice Ed, I have two 1077's and one  1277 and some use ATF but my go to 1077 I run 10/30 synthetic in. I think ATF is a better choice as when you engage the clutch idler it loads the motor up. Especially when cold. ATF is not quite as bad.

Like most decisions to change working designs and products.     They are probably driven by cost reduction.

Jim makes a good point above.    Motor oil requires more warm up time during cold weather use.     Warm up is probably a good practice for the engine and hydro regardless of the fluid used.

All my hydros have 10W30 motor oil.      1971  Eaton 6,    1974   Sundstrand,  1980, 1986, 1988 Eaton 1100s     Wheel Horse warns to prevent damage the Eaton 1100 must be warmed for 10 minutes before use.   The lift on one of my Eaton 1100s will not operate until after the 10 minute warm up.    The other two lift immediately.

cost

I don't mean to make anybody in here sound 3 weeks older than dirt or anything but was ATF expensive compared to oil back in the early 70s?

For some reason, I don't remember the 70s Eric.     But I do remember paying $0.19 for a gallon of Good Gulf Gas in 1958.    Guess that makes me a couple years older than dirt.

And ATF did cost more than motor oil.

Maybe the change was  because Captain Ahab retired from whaling.:P

Original Type A ATF and early Dexron used Sperm Whale oil as an ingredient...
