Correct. Bulk of material is chopped out with adze. One can go pretty close to the line with it. It can all be done with the plane alone, however in reality its faster this way and one saves the blade on plane. If plane alone is used only the left side of cutter is being used gradually moving into right side as panel is cut. That accelerates dulling of blade substantially. Also when taking a full cut towards the end it takes substantial effort to do it. Using adze saves plane blade and effort pushing plane towards the end. Some planes actually require two men . formariz 11,987 #10 Posted October 13, 2020 (edited) Dark plane on the left was my grandfather's and it was used by two men one pulling it using a dowel placed through hole in front of it. Behemoth on the right I made and let me just say that it gives me a work out every time I use it. It really should also be used by two men, however I have to do it alone.I use it to make rather large panels and it is fully adjustable in width and depth.
