Steering Wheel Woes

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

Working on my Lawn Ranger today. Got my butt kicked by the transmission I'm looking to put in (axle key ways all shot).

I pulled the steering wheel / shaft / 2-piece gas tank assembly off. The steering wheel is broken, so im going to replace it.

Have it in a vice (with soft jaws) holding the shaft, big ol puller on the wheel (grabbing on the metal inside). No luck.

Yes, I pulled the old pin, yes I have it soaking in PB blaster, yes I tried smaking the shaft / puller with a hammer to get vibrations, and yes, I've tried heat on the shaft with a MAP gas torch.

Should I just keep soaking it and hoping it pops? Or cut my losses, trim the shaft, and drill a new cross hole?

Thanks!

If the steering wheel is shot, just take a dremel with a cut off wheel and make 2 cuts in the piece thats on the shaft

Oh, and another thing I tried was to put a socket on the concrete floor, and then put the steering wheel on top of it (with the shaft sticking up). Then hit the end with a big hammer to try to push the steering wheel further onto the shaft to hopefully loosen it up and get it moving. Also no luck with that.

Got access to an arbor press or a hand pump hydraulic press?

This is the steering wheel. The metal inside the spoke has been broken from the center hub. Yes, I remove the pin that's sticking out.

If I could figure out a way to pop the spoke back in place, and secure it someway, I think it may be usable, but I don't know how at the point.

And she's off.

Got out the breaker bar for a little more leverage on the puller. Gave it another 1/4 turn, and then rapped on puller shaft again (for the vibrations). Gave out a loud pop, and the steering wheel shifted about 1/16" up. Once it moved that initial ammount, I was able to use a normal ratchet on the puller to remove it the rest of the way.
