71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted October 11, 2020 (edited) Just pulled the hubs off my 5053 Transmission out of my Commando 8. I have a set of 4-lug hubs I am putting on for trailer wheels. Pulled the hubs off, and found this Edited October 11, 2020 by 71_Bronco 2
The Tuul Crib 7,337 #2 Posted October 11, 2020 If you got the hubs off already looks like the rest of it should be a breeze. That is if you have replacement axles!

71_Bronco 1,072 #4 Posted October 11, 2020 I dont have a welder handy, and even if i did, I dont think i could pull that off. I've already split / rebuilt an 8-speed, so this should be cake. Just need to get q set of good axles.

WHX?? 49,158 #7 Posted October 11, 2020 Thanks Ed .. Yes lets see some pics of those hub keyways. We might be able to get away with just some new keyways in the hubs and either Ed's fix or even st shim the existing axle keys. They don't look what i would call terrible and i have gotten away with worst. Hubs usually take the worst of the beating due to the softer cast metal of the hubs. Either way the doctor is going to order a 2nd set screw. 3 hours ago, 71_Bronco said: . Just makes sence if you are going to split the tranny. 4
71_Bronco 1,072 #8 Posted October 12, 2020 One of the hubs looked okay (the key-way), but the other one had some widening of the slot where the key sits. I'll take some pics tonight. My dad suggested putting in new keys, and filling the void with JB Weld. While I'm sure that would work, I don't know if I'd be able to remove the key at a later date if needed. I could try some kind of release agent on the key. I've read Kiwi shoe polish works, or soot from a flame.

71_Bronco 1,072 #11 Posted October 15, 2020 So I've been thinking about this. I think I'm going to try the JB Weld. I am going to clean the axles well, and use the soot method on the key. I'm hoping that it will allow the key to pop out after the JB Weld cures. I don't have anything to loose at this point. A-Z Tractor does have a bunch of the axles I need, but they are $40 each, and I would have to tear apart the transmission to change them (not that tearing it apart is difficult). If this was going to be a worker, I'd split it for sure and replace the axles. However, since this is just a yard-putter, and I know the transmission works, I don't think it's necessary to pull it all apart. Thoughts?
Ed Kennell 38,637 #12 Posted October 15, 2020 I agree, you have nothing to lose and have a very good chance this will last a long time. If your hubs only have one set screw, I would add the second one and use stacked set screws to lock them in place. IMO, the the square head lock bolt and lock nut tends to pull the bolt away from the shaft and decrease the locking effect.
lynnmor 7,354 #13 Posted October 15, 2020 My thought would be that you have the opportunity to do a proper repair now but things may be different in the future.
Pullstart 63,096 #14 Posted October 16, 2020 If it doesn’t work and you didn’t JB Weld the hubs in place, you could at least cut the axles if you actually render them junk if/when you decide to split the case...
