Muffler & Hood, How Close?

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

Was working on my Lawn Ranger, test fitting some pipe for a Jim Kemp stack.

The horizontal pipe coming from the engine clears by about 1/2" from the hood, and I have about 1-1/2" from the body of the muffler to the side of the hood.

How close is "too close" when it comes to mounting these? Obviously they get hot, so I don't want to hurt the paint / metal on the hood.

Also, on a side note, which way should the exhaust exit? I typically see them pointed perpendicular to the side of the tractor (blowing directly right in this case). Should I tilt it a little forward? Or leave it perpendicular?

Thanks

I have Jim’s stacks on two of my tractors. The lawn Ranger that I got from Denny Clarke is probably a little over an inch away from the hood and he put a heat shield on it. It’s had no issues. On my 606 rat rod you can see it’s about a quarter inch away and the paint has not been affected after a couple years of use. Denny’s lawn Ranger has a 7 horse Kohler on it. My 606 has 6 1/2 horse predator I got for free for my dad. The Kohler definitely runs hotter because the paint on the muffler boils after I’ve used it for lawn maintenance after it’s run for a while. With regard to orientation, as you can see, both are perpendicular to the tractor. For some reason the lawn Ranger  blows fumes in my face and the 606 does not. I don’t know if any of that helps but it’s based on my actual experience. Let me know if I can get you any more information that could be helpful.98AD2C75-8AC0-46C9-9A7E-6BA99FA8DEA0.jpeg.97262cd8473a143858acabae417d2f53.jpeg4D0FFB1E-77CF-4F0F-9872-D5934F8F0BA6.jpeg.cb8c5cc396b8b860d7fdf76baf81fbb3.jpeg01379853-89B7-4B93-8778-0A95B5226215.jpeg.918a5fe99ef6db4cdcd9eebe8b9639d0.jpegDDF3E83B-20DB-4D5D-9F09-2C0C31886835.jpeg.15d9566ef80b2b0bb97860059d3ec57d.jpeg
