Jims plow day 2019 carnage

Recommended Posts

Ok, so last year's plow day at J&C stables was a great time as usual.  MTC_0033.JPG.108d5cda5a2be1a27e91848869ffd3db.jpeg.1a6d359e2ede5652284cf2761c9762ae.jpegJust as the final hours of the day were wrapping up my plow rig just stoppped dead in her tracks still screaming at 3600 rpm. I was dead in the water. Got pulled off the field checking over the obvious i couldnt see anything wrong. Fall got busy and i parked the tractor, on to winter, then spring,  summer shows up and passes now here we are 3 weeks from Jims plow day 2020. Time to fix the tractor.  Heres the patient ready to go under the knife20201003_182745.jpg.dffb3969348570bc29e37a2d7b57d442.jpg

Got the transmission off

Let me remove a few more gears so you can see

Just to answer questions this is a 5060 transmission (6 speed) that i converted to 8 pinion differential.  This is the gear on the end of the input shaft that makes contact with the big gear on the brake shaft. I will have to dig around and see what i have in the parts bins tomorrow.

Got any drawings for that transmission lift? That looks like a real back saver.  Bill

:twocents-02cents:             Here is a simple solution to removing an installing the transmission I came up with. It is high enough that the wheels and tires do not have to be removed.

Well. I find that most working transmissions don't have 2 piece gears.

I have an 8 speed that's for parts. Don't know if a 6 speed has the same gear.

If the gear I have will work for you it's yours for the freight cost.

WHX??

Dan or I may have a couple of those gears if none in your's or Dad's stash. Worse comes to worse I have a complete 5060 ready to roll.

I may have asked you this but why the conversion to 8 pinion? Steel side plates?

Pull a 8" plow and plow all day. :banana-dance:

Pull a 12" plow and work all night to plow the next day. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. :hide:

I'm thinking that transmission is cursed. I'd hang it on the front and put in a different one.:ychain:

Pullstart

I might start using broken Norman parts to weigh down my plow rig, then we can drive over the scales to see the before and after like the biggest loser shows do!

I was going to say, without looking, I think that gear is in every transmission at least twice.  First time I've seen that one go though.

@prondzy Here we go off subject (and this is a great subject- dang, you guys have some fun!) but what muffler is that, and is it quiet? Looking for something nice and quiet for the lawn duty 1277, and really want to go back to a stack.

@Greentored

Scott that looks like a Cub muffler turned in the upward direction kind of like I have on my Patriot horse. Nice quiet low tone. You'd like it.

You can get cheap ones on the flea Bay anywhere between 30 and $50...

Its a cub muffler, just grind off the mount on the pipe. Cut the stack flush on the end and add a rain topper

You want a stack go to @Achto 's school of stack building.

I took that one and put in on the Raider 12 plow mule which is one sweet running 301 now.  You'll get to hear it Mike.

Got the transmission back together saturday, made a few upgrades, double set screws, new woodruff keys, and studs/lug nuts. I noticed some cracking on the gusset plates need to address this next.20201012_191715.jpg.e029358607ea359fd830a53d8755380d.jpg20201012_191704.jpg.99f3999a150ce140ddd4d7d3891af3ad.jpg

That input pully is huge... what gear do you run in? I don't remember the few times I have plowed with that tractor.

I also put the thick washers behind the lug studs. I feel the studs just seat better.
