The engine pulley question... What size is the pulley on the transmission?

Also, are you wanting to retain close to stock speed?

Thanks you!!! I wouldn’t mind staying close to stock it has a 8 speed transmission so it has high low so maybe wouldn’t hurt to be alittle faster but I don’t want to go to fast being a row crop front end, the pulley on the back is 4 inch

Round shift knobs and a 4" pulley gives it a fair chance of being a 6 speed. Have you tried it for Limited Slip?

 

A 4" rear pulley will want a 2" engine pulley to be close to stock. I put a 2.5" engine pulley on a 1267 which is effectively what you have. Worked well. 

 

Will you be wanting to use an engine PTO?

You'll likely need to use an electric one if so.

God long day your right :deadhorse: it’s a 6 speed transmission is what I meant .. and I would eventually like to put a hy2 on it  but for this year it will be getting the typical lift handle.. prefect on the pulley I think I’ll go 2.5 also

With that much HP you need to increase the size of both pulleys. There is not enough area in those little pulleys to handle that HP.  Minim size pulleys would be the same as used on and 8 speed and it wouldn't hurt to go a little bigger on both if you have the room for them.

I wouldn't gear up over 1.1 or 1.2.

Plowing with a trike? Or the predator? The trike should tip over like a big red 3 wheeler in the furrow its gonna be interesting

I have no idea how it will work but I am willing to try I have seen some other guys do it down in Illinois but it would only make sense for it to tip over I am going to be adding about 100 lbs in suit case weights on front and wheel weights all the way around, also thought about doing three 6-12 wheels in back to give it more weight on the left side or do you think it would be better with a 23-10.50-12

Hey Lee's got a great point. 

 

That 22hp mill isn't going to be able to hook up with the little pulleys. Wheelhorse went from 2" engine/4" transmission to 4" engine/6" transmission between 1967 and 1968 for that very reason. 

As stated above 4 and 6 should be your minimum sizes. 

Pulleys can be obtained from several places. Surplus center. Fleabay. Here in wanted ads, etc.

I would use stock pulleys  for a gear shift tractor and a Wheel Horse 7473 drive belt and it will pull all day long. No need to reinvent the wheel. When you get the correct pulleys and belt you will be able to determine engine position.

The biggest concern to me would be the pulley width. The belt that came on the older models is an "A" (4L) belt and with higher HP you would want to go to a "B" (5L) belt,

Width is certainly of utmost importance. A larger pulley will also increase the "grab area" from pulley to belt.

It will work  Steering will be different as the front wheels won't be in the furrow.  With 100 # in each wheel it will be stable at some steep angles, I have my 312-8 lifted with 25" rear tires and 16 1/2" on the front with the extended front spindles for the 6" wheels.  I have 80# in each rear wheel and mow at some steep angles. 

You ask about steering sprockets. I think a slower steering would be better so a smaller sprocket at the steering wheel and a larger at the front wheels. And plan on adding extra weight on the front. Extra  weight on the left wheel will help with stability and also help with traction as that wheel tends to spin more then the one in the furrow.

Eric the transmission pully on the 8 speeds is at least an 6" or larger, haven't measured it.

I also agree with Richard you need a 5/8" belt and the larger pulleys.

I wrote 6 above but I think it's a little more.

Ryan when I built mine I used a small pulley at the steering wheel to a big pulley in the frame that went to a small pulley again then went to a big pulley at the spindle. Kinda gives it a gear reduction feel that way. Can't remember the exact sizes but they were the smallest and bigets I could fit. I started at the steering and stretched the chains tight when I put in the rest of the pulleys.

Got a few pics from mine. The front spindle was made from a cast iron mower deck spindle the rest was spare parts that I had laying around. Just realized, with no shows this year I didn't even get it out of storage this year! It drives very nice and will turn on a dime! Only thing that I never got done was steering stops! Lol.

There isn't any lock on chain drive steering It will turn completely around. The lock if any would have to be built into the front spindle.
