How 'bout your local food favorites?

We took a trip Thursday to get a pasty fix at Lehto's in St Ignace, Mi.

We drove north on M66 to enjoy the fall colors.  Stopped at Deadman's Hill overlook near Petoskey:

Got a couple of beef pastys.  Had to eat them in the car, as the store was a take out only, and it was a little too cold to eat at the picnic tables that were outside:

These were beef, potato, onion, and rutabaga wrapped in a pastry shell.   As we were eating them, we commented that they were so tasty, another would be good, though we would not be able to eat another.  Back into the store to buy two more cold ones to take home with us.

Back across the bridge (the Mackinac Bridge) to go home:20201008_162009.jpg.ed6438a57a20c35fabf0fccef972f77d.jpg

440 miles round trip for lunch.  The Cherokee came up with 31 and change mpg for the trip.

Because 450 miles is just too far...

Glad you had a good trip.

Would have been less 'cause the Lehto's store west of St. Ignace on US2 was sold out and closed.  If we'd have known that it would have saved us 10 or 15 miles.

my semi-local food favorite are the baby back ribs at Dee Jays in Weirton WV

best ribs in the universe

I've been a Dee Jays customer since the early 80's - never had a meal that was less than a 9.5 or so

it's a hour drive from my house - so it's a two hour round trip ... and well worth the trip

Brown bread is bread that's brown. Comes in a can. Awesomeness....

Saw this at the local grocery store here in southern Illinois the other day, so bought a can.

Wow is this stuff dense.  Very moist.  Kind of sweet.    They only had the raisin type but beggars can’t be choosers.

Can’t help but think a natural accompaniment would be canned cranberry sauce slices. 😜

Might buy it again.

I have spoken with the local food authority (BBT) and after a moment of ponderation, consideration, deliberation, and a fair amount of musing, she says... "Hmm, I don't see why not"

We make pasty a couple times a year. Very easy meal to prepare and so good.  If you want to do it in a hurry, frozen pie crusts work wonderfully.

my wife’s grandmother was a yooper from Ironwood.  All of her family worked in the iron mines, so those pies were a staple. I’m glad she showed us how to make them.

Sposen' maybe you would you consider sharing the recipe?

We are trolls (Michigander, for growing up under (south of) the Mackinaw bridge) in my family.  My sister did go to Northern Michigan U, but that education did not include learning how to make a real pasty.
