Leaky HY-2 Pump

I've had this pump apart and put seals in it, but either the input shaft whole or the shaft itself is so warn out that no seal will ever keep it from leaking. It leaks fluid about as fast as I can put it in and it leaks all over the belt guard and gets on the belt and just generally makes a mess. Anyone have a fix for this. I didn't know if you could drill the hole out an bush it and get a better input shaft? I'm just thinking out loud here so any ideas are appreciated. The original seal for the 1/2  drive pulley shaft was thicker than todays replacements.   Yes the shaft does some wearing with age and use.

Also  using  good hydraulic fluid is important.  I use Lucas .

 

I have recommended putting two of the newer seals in the shaft on Hein Werner  HY pumps that leak.   That has helped most people having a leaky pump.

 

It's possible that a seal could be installed on the inside face of the pump if the shaft and gear were removed and a depression for the cut of the seal size made .  That way you would have a seal on each end of the housing. 

 

Other than that replacement shafts have been made in the past and the Bolens and the Cub Cadet owners have made and sold them on their websites.   I have not seen any Wheel Horse owners make a 

new shaft and gear for the Hein Werner pump. 

 

I have  owned about ten of these for various models and sold parts in the past but I am down to my own replacement parts stock now.

 

Changing the O ring on the piston cylinder is also important.

I have put a kit in it from Lowell with the 2 seals and that was several years ago. I did replace all the O rings in the pump including the piston cylinder so that's why I was a little stumped.

I would contact Lowell. He just did a pump for me. He has built a test stand for these pumps.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to. It's getting to the point where there isn't much more I can personally do with it.
