WHX?? 48,780 #26 Posted September 28, 2020 Dibs on that seat should it go a parts route but too nice a tractor to be parting out. I would rebuild that motor fer sure and would do it for cost of parts were you close. Last one I did was around 300 with machineing. Does the piston move with the crank? ebinmaine 67,277 #29 Posted September 28, 2020 I've had four tractors show up on my doorstep within a year now and I'm not even looking. Two of those four are limited slip. I'm looking forward to getting one of those up and cooking.

rjg854 11,350 #31 Posted September 29, 2020 I talked with the repairman today when I went in to pay him for the tractor. I found out the original owner was 90+ years old and he bought the Raider brand new in 1968. I asked him why he didn't just fix the engine and keep it. John told me the fella said, I'm just to old to be able to use it anymore, with tears in his eyes. I suppose that's why the Raider is so unmolested. I've located an engine, so this tractor will live on. While I install the engine, I'll update all the wiring add some lights and change the fuel lines, flush the transmission, and install a new ignition switch which was robbed from the dash. So I'm thinking over the winter I'll do a wet sand on the sheet metal and either clear coat it or just coat it with MMO and call it close enough. 2

rjg854 11,350 #33 Posted September 29, 2020 I'd like to thank @johnnymag3 for his offer of a replacement engine for the Raider. Of course I still have to go get it. 2 1

CCW 1,292 #38 Posted September 30, 2020 You say you do not have the confidence to rebuild the engine. If you plan on scrapping it then pull it apart to see what is really happening on the inside. Cannot make it any worse and you might find the repair to be simpler than you thought. If it is too far gone then scrap it or give it away. Great learning opportunity. rjg854 11,350 #39 Posted September 30, 2020 You must be a mind reader, cause that was my exact thoughts. There's only one way to learn and that's just "do it" I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. I'm apprehensive, let's say, cause I don't want muck something up.
AMC RULES 37,127 #40 Posted September 30, 2020 Would be nice if we could follow along with your engine disassembly and maybe we can learn something in the process too. 1

The spark plug on a Kohler is located between the valves and the top of the block is below the plug hole. If the top of the engine block moves you have BIG problems! You got it Craig, I'll try to remember to take pictures as I disassemble it. John says I can work with him on the reassembly part of it. He seems to know what he's doing.

While I'm pretty good at fixing things, It's been an awful lot of years since I worked on Kohler's. (It's kinda nice to finally have one in the garage) Tomorrow, I'm going to pull the plug on my 310, and stick a screwdriver in the hole and crank the engine. When the screwdriver doesn't move at all, I'll blame you.
