rjg854 11,350 #1 Posted September 27, 2020 The guy I got it from is a repairman that got it from the owner. It's got a broken rod, so he was going to scrap it. So I figured it's got many good parts on it so why not part it out. Better than going to the big corral in the sky. 8 5
ZXT 2,401 #2 Posted September 27, 2020 Looks like a good tractor that needs an ignition switch and a used engine thrown on it.. No way it would be getting parted out at my house! It's in better shape than a lot of mine Have you confirmed that it actually has a broken rod?
rjg854 11,350 #3 Posted September 27, 2020 The repairman gave me the ignition switch, that's how I found the tractor. No I haven't determined if the rod is broken I was taking his word on that. I've been looking around for an engine and will probably sit on it for a while before I actually do anything else. I'd like to find an engine and get it going again. Time will tell. 5
ebinmaine 67,275 #4 Posted September 27, 2020 With a 6 speed LSD I'd be getting that one going again. 3

rjg854 11,350 #7 Posted September 27, 2020 What's the easiest way to determine if the rod is actually broken I've got to either pull the head or the pan, correct?
ebinmaine 67,275 #8 Posted September 27, 2020 I'd pop the head off. Fairly easy.
rjg854 11,350 #9 Posted September 28, 2020 That's what I thought I was going to have to do. I know just enough to be dangerous, Eric. I've got basic knowledge and enough tools to do that, as far as rebuilding an engine, I don't have enough confidence for that. So that's why I'm looking for a running engine before I try parting it out.
ebinmaine 67,275 #10 Posted September 28, 2020 The advantage you have here is that a ton of 10 horse and up Kohler engines would be a direct bolt in. Taking the head off is fairly straightforward. Remove outer sheet metal and there will be 8 or 9(?) Head bolts. Does the engine turn with the key at all? If so an easy quick check would be to remove the spark plug and turn the engine. If you hear no stroke differences while turning then further research is warranted.
echris 1,425 #11 Posted September 28, 2020 In the past, I've removed the plug and stuck a screwdriver in the hole and manually rotated the engine with slight downward pressure on the screwdriver. Also, I have an old Kohler available. Comes with a Cub Cadet though.
rjg854 11,350 #12 Posted September 28, 2020 There's no key switch, I used that in the C160, that's how I found out about this guy. After I got the switch, I went back and got the tractor instead of the guy scrapping it.

If the block is not cracked a broken rod is not the worst thing in the world. The engine should be rebuildable. The Kohler manual does a good job of walking you through it.
Sam Pasch 449 #15 Posted September 28, 2020 (edited) It looks pretty good to me. Get it running, wipe it down with some wd-40, and get to mowing! Edited September 28, 2020 by Sam Pasch
ZXT 2,401 #16 Posted September 28, 2020 Turn it over by hand and if it just freewheels or makes awful noises, you have a rod issue. If it turns over and you feel the compression stroke, then the rod isn't broken. Might not mean that the engine is good, but I've bought more than one machine in the past that was listed as having a "bad motor"... My C-160 I mow with is a perfect example. Bought the tiller and got the tractor with it for cheap because it "needs an engine". I filed the points and mow with it weekly.. 1
Sparky-(Admin) 21,301 #17 Posted September 28, 2020 That’s a saveable machine for sure. I would do a motor swap right away...then you can take your time with the old motor, assessing or rebuilding.
rjg854 11,350 #18 Posted September 28, 2020 The hood stand on the left side of the tractor is crack straight through, but that could possibly be welded up. Pretty much after going through things it's basically unmolested, and mostly complete. Tranny oil of course needs changed bad and needs a boot cover. Oil in the engine barely reached the stick. It needs a thorough cleaning and degreasing, just to be able to work on it. It appears to have not been that well maintained. But the wheels and tires are in really nice shape and are original branded tires. Mower deck is a later model with a mule drive conversion. Blades spin nicely and there's no drag or noises to the deck spinning it by hand. Even the seat doesn't have and tears and still has cushion in it. Tie rods are pretty much shot, so there's lots of slop to the wheel. Those are the obvious things so far with a once over. I am trying to find an engine first, but that may take some time. I don't want to put much into it until and if I can find an engine. As far as I'm concerned it can sit here till next Spring to give me the time for a search. The dealers tags shows it was sold in Watkins Glen NY, maybe 40 miles from me.
ebinmaine 67,275 #19 Posted September 28, 2020 Well for 50 bucks you done all right. Just the bracket alone on that mule drive conversion is worth that. If the seat is really in decent shape that's worth $150 or more to some people. Transmission? I've seen those go anywhere for $125 up to $200. As far as a WORKING tractor goes, those are very very tough to beat. 12 Horse is enough to do most any task and the Limited Slip really adds A LOT to the capabilities. I've seen it demonstrated first hand with the comparison between my own Cinnamon Horse which does not have LSD versus Trina's 867 that does. Her and her tractor combined weighs several hundred pounds less than me on mine and she has better winter and mud traction than I do.

The bore "looks" good but I know it has to be miced.
