Pullstart 62,791 #1 Posted September 24, 2020 There’s a lawn tractor down the road at a “barn” sale... needs brakes. What should a good running 24 horse VERTICAL go for by itself?
ebinmaine 67,274 #2 Posted September 24, 2020 Around here they say if it runs drives and cuts grass it's worth $300 no matter what it looks like. Most of the stuff I see in my area that is a modern machine that looks fairly decent is in the $400 to $600 area. Just remember that 24 horse is not what you would be accustomed to if comparing it to something like a k582 40-year-old Kohler. My experience overall has shown me that the older engines are far more torquey
Pullstart 62,791 #3 Posted September 24, 2020 Forgot to mention, there is no deck. I’m primarily focusing on the engine. For the price, I feel like I’m looking at a decent battery and getting the rest with it.
ebinmaine 67,274 #4 Posted September 24, 2020 How much $$ ?
WHNJ701 4,165 #5 Posted September 24, 2020 The tractor has no value other than scrap. I think realistic 150 range. I stuck running 22hp vertical on eBay it went 80 bucks, past verticals I sold sell better in the early spring.
stevasaurus 22,708 #6 Posted September 24, 2020 I gave away one of those Craftsman like that. I bet it still looks the same as it did. It had a good engine on it also.

8ntruck 6,991 #12 Posted September 24, 2020 (edited) We had a Craftsman lawn tractor with a vertical shaft twin B&S years ago. The Finnish exchange student we hosted for a year liked that machine. He would mow in high gear, pretending that he was Mika Hakkinen. Edited September 24, 2020 by 8ntruck

bds1984 1,429 #17 Posted September 25, 2020 That is a gold clone of a Husqvarna and for mowing lawns they aren't really bad at all. I just sold one very similar to that with a deck for $350 but it was a 22HP model and otherwise identical to yours. Of course I went through it and serviced it out to make sure it was good for the next owner; I am in a state of perpetual amazement to see what people are asking for basically junk on the local ads. Running engines like that usually fetch $100-150 from the boneyards around here but they sometimes wont include a starter or solenoid. With that rig being a non-hyrdo, I smell a racing tractor in the near future. 1

ebinmaine 67,274 #19 Posted September 25, 2020 (edited) I knew a guy a few years back that took a Poulan pro of of that similar size and shape. Did a double pulley swap and the ratio was so high that first gear had to slide the clutch a little. He had done some motorcycle racing and had Kahuna's El grande. Huge volumes of intestinal fortitude. That tractor would get up OVER 35 mph on asphalt and it even scared HIM Edited September 25, 2020 by ebinmaine
Pullstart 62,791 #20 Posted September 25, 2020 I mentioned that to Rylee... but also told her she won’t be partaking! 6th is quick enough in the yard for now!

At half throttle it was already 11-12 mph and definitely isn't the type of machine built for that speed; now she'll run about 8 mph at full throttle which is about where they should have been from the factory. 2 hours ago, pullstart said: I mentioned that to Rylee... but also told her she won’t be partaking! 6th is quick enough in the yard for now!
