What's the hardest job to do on a WH?

Recommended Posts

echris

I was thinking about this question tonight. What's the hardest thing to do on a WH, service/repair wise.

And I really couldn't come up with anything that terrible.

But then it hit me. There is one job, when executed incorrectly, will give a big owie, every time:

Slide that sweet restored mower deck under the tractor, and grab that Tach-o-matic bar too soon...

There it is, that's the job. When you slam that pointy part of the deck support between your hand and the frame.

And that's it. That's the only bad job.

That's why we love WH. :D

Of all models I have from RJ35s to 520H anything you have to do on a Suburban 551 under the hood is a real pain. Many tasks need to be done with the hood on and there is so much stuff  crammed under there that it is very frustrating. That is particularly so if tractor is on the ground . Hard on your back , knees, and mind.

Hardest thing to do on a Wheel Horse?  Get off it. Put it away.  Say good night.  Say Good Winter!

Wiring and safety switches. I hate safety  switches. I have a newer mower it had   a switch on the Shute for the bagger. REALLY. Most are gone now.

There are four rights of passage regarding :wh: repairs. Three have been mentioned by @Bill D @The Tuul Crib and @Burnerman. The fourth is probably the most frequently mentioned around these parts and that is pulling a hub.               :soapbox:

Getting the brake drum off my 854 to replace the seal was a real chore, just about as bad as a stuck hub or hitch pin :omg:

1. Deciding patina or paint - then deciding the shade of paint...

2. What brand, type and viscosity of oil to use...

3. What to name your tractor..

4. Worker, trailer queen or cruiser...

- Trying not to buy that WH that just pops up on FB or CL.

- Trying to decide which attachment to put on and play with / bring to the show.

In all seriousness, the hardest job I've had so far was removing some hubs that someone tried to weld to the axles.

Removing a hub that flipped the key and rolled over it - getting the 1533's out can be a pain also .

This is a good one. I had to do that a bunch of times at the shop I worked at as a kid. Never fun.

In my 9 short months of Wheel Horse addiction, I mean hobby, here's the list:

1. Hitch pins

2. Hubs

3. Staying off marketplace and trying/wanting to buy everything that says 'wheel horse'.

4. Not putting a stack on everything

5. By far the worst: Parking them!

Honorable mention: leaving the damn thing alone and not changing pulley ratios:lol:
