c120, c100?

Good morning,

I recently got into the wheel horse world and have been loving it. I purchased a c120 non running and after replacing coil, condenser and points, she fired right up. I was searching online and some of these forums to find my year, after finding the model number/serial number plate I looked up the model number, 1-0390-9. I looked it up and it comes up as a c100 series. My question is, was that normal maybe like a late year model they used a c100 frame for possibly? model number reads 1-0390-9 and serial number on that tag reads 994040. maybe there's another tag I'm not seeing. Called a local shop and they said the year is a 75 going off that model number but that was all. just don't know if they used the same frames or what maybe. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Added your serial number to the list. The tractor model number is just the 1-0390. The 9 at the end tells us it is a 1974 model. 9-5=4=1974

If you could post pics it would be super helpful.

All of the C series used the same frame. What's known as a long frame.

Thank you for the quick response! I figured they did but did they change out the identification tags? For different models?

Thank you! So this leads me to believe it’s originally a c100?

That is correct. The only difference is the engine and possibly lights and gauges.

Don't be the least bit bummed out. A C 100 is a very capable machine as well.

 

Hard to tell from those pictures but it looks like your hood has been changed out for a 1976 or 77 model. I say that because there does not appear to be a hood ornament which a 1974 or five would have had.

i only say that because ive been searching for a c120 8 speed for a long while and jumped on the first one that came up, but whoever changed it up did a good job with the decals and changing out the engine to the 12hp as well! ight look for a c120 now as well and bring this one back to her original glory as a c100! Now I might be on the look out for a year matching hood too.

No worries on the hood. All you have to do is add the hood ornament. That's the only difference.

Welcome @Mike_c120!  A 10 horse engine has likely all the power you need, shy of a 60” deck (that wouldn’t fit your machine) or a 2 stage snowblower.  I run numerous ground engaging attachments behind Putt Putt, my ‘62 502 that I’ve spruced up with an 8 hp Kohler and a C series 8 speed transmission.

 

If you need, by all means use this excuse to look for another Wheel Horse or five though!

Beautiful machine you got! yeah the tractor I have now has the k301 (12hp) and its awesome but after running the model number here with the help from everyone its deteremined its originaly a c100 but someone changed it to be a c120 so I might bring her back to her glory as a c100 and yes now I have an excuse to find an original 120! lol

Some things that are strange to me are the following. The hood is a 1976 or later (no hood ornament or holes). The rear fender pan is bolted on, not hinged in the back to open to a tool box, and the seat is hinged to flip forward like the 1976's and later.  The engine has an oil dipstick tube, not found on the 10 HP models, but found on 12 HP and up.

 

My humble opinion is that you did indeed purchase a C-120 that has an incorrect ID tag.

I'll bet that thing is either in 1976 or 77 c120 with an ID tag that was either miss stamped or maybe not readable.

Thank you for the response! That’s what a buddy of mine was also saying maybe it was miss stamped or a late model frame, the engine is a 12hp Kohler for sure, the rear seat does come foward but where the seat is mounted that flips back giving easy access to the transaxle dipstick, one thing that stood out to me that I can’t find a answer for is the muffler though how this one sticks out instead of going down.  I attached a picture of the ID tag I found on the side of the frame!

I’m currently swapping Duramax engines from a donor to my hauler as well.
