Remove paint, OUTER layer Only?

I've got what we believe to be a 1968 Raider 9 here.

Spenser was nice enough to connect me to it. Some previous owner was nice enough to spray the entire tractor on the outer layer with a sort of maroon metallic paint. They went over the decals and there's some overspray here and there.

 

That outer layer of nasty maroon paint is going to come off. What I'm wondering is if there is a way that I can carefully save some or even most of the original red.

And what about the decals? Those are also underneath that previously mentioned nasty maroon paint...

Lots of diah soap in the water and wet sand with 320 - 400 grit wet or dry black sandpaper, applying lots of that soapy water during the process.

Of course, have Trina test on an inconspicuous area first, because obviously, you won't be doing this. 

Mothers mag an aluminum polish on the decals.

When I worked at the auto body shop in highschool, we used clay and spray wax to remove over spray

You want to use Acetone.  Dampen a rag and rub gently.  This makes it an easy job with no damage to decals...if done gently.    You can buy a small can at ACE.

Easy Off oven cleaner. Back when business vehicles had painted on lettering instead of vinyl we would use Easy Off to remove lettering from vehicles that the dealer ship would take in on trade. It would remove the lettering with minimal damage to the original paint. After the lettering was gone a light buffing would make it look like nothing was ever there. Spray it on, wait a few minutes, wash it off. Try a small spot on the tractor first of course. Try to keep it away from the decals, I don't know what the out come of that would be.

Oh .. I don't know. I thought maybe I'd have one or two that were red.

The c160 with the Tecumseh engine is going to be a full frame off straight up restoration as accurate as I can get it. That won't be for another year probably.

I have four tractor projects that I want to get done before I start on that c-160. 1970 Charger hydro. 68 Raider. Trina's 856 military tribute. Colossus..

 

And of course that doesn't even count whatever other crazy stuff that lady comes up with......

Eric   Getting colder out snow can't be that far off.  You really should get that Charger running.  Once you plow with a hydro you will never want to go back to gear...especially as I recall your plow pattern requires a bit of one way plowing with a lot of backing up.  The hydro speed advantage especially in reverse is huge......

Absolutely true. I'm actually hoping my work will let off a little bit in about 3 weeks because we have another driver possibly starting...

 

I should have all the parts for the Charger that I need. Just a matter of getting time to work on it.

Back to the thread subject - I'vs used Easy Off oven cleaner to remove paint from plastic model car bodies in the past.  It did not damage the surface of the body.

Once word gets out orphan tractors start showing up, I constantly get contacted by friends of friends who looking to get rid of stuff.  Most of it turns out to be 70s or 80s 90s riding mowers which I don't take.
