K 91 Engine Pulley Alignment

I've got a k 91 with a 2" OD  engine pulley.  

So the engine is supposed to have the pulley with the 2.5" OD for the rj58.    

Also the pulley doesn't align with idler pulley and transmission pulley when bolted onto the tractor.  But not by much.

The engine runs so well I want to just get a shorter belt and move the pulley into alignment.  

There doesn't appear to be any way to adjust the engine pulley. ie just tap into alignment with the other two pulleys. Solutions?

The right way to fix this...pull off that engine pulley and clean up the engine shaft and inside the pulley.  The pulley should slide on enough to align.  I would not just try tapping it on more the way it is.  :occasion-xmas:

How did you know I tried to tap it.

 

I'd love to take it off and clean it up.

Just not sure how. Never removed one before.

Searching for gear pullers at local store now.

Is the pulley just held on snug with the keyway. 

There doesn't appear to be anything else holding it in place.

Also looks to be slightly out of alignment with keyway

be careful using a puller , you can damage the pulley if done incorrectly.  a gear type puller on the first V groove can snap it.  on pulleys like that i use a bearing spliter on the very inside of the pulley and basically a steering wheel puller with some long bolts

 

i don't think there is a key in there

 

if you are unsure , take a picture of how you will use the puller and post it before applying any pressure

jsp-333, i would be very careful in the movement attempt, i agree with 305 using a bearing splitter , 2 piece on the inside shoulder of that pulley . you will be using strength against strength , with penetrating oil and possible heat , if you are solid in your mounting , your mechanical advantage should move it. i would also use a long breaker bar and 6 point socket to insure the movement force. pete

Remove that pulley. I wouldn't be to worried about damaging that pulley because it's not the correct one anyway. It's off of a snowblower and should be changed.

Look for hole with a set screw in it which will need to be taken out. Spray some penetrating oil in the set screw hole, and both ends of the shaft and into the keyway groove. Soak spray soak spray and repeat

Get a new 2 1/2" pulley to install with a new key. RJs are a bit slow moving as it is and it will be crawling with that smaller pulley on the engine. Original pulleys have the set screw deep in the groove but if you don't plan to run implements like a deck, this pulley will do

The clutch idler pulley rides on top of the top belt loop for and RJ58. It pushes down on the belt to tighten it when the pedal is released.

Do you have a belt guard? The correct belt is a cloth covered 1/2" wide x 29" The raw edge belt will constantly grab the engine pulley and the trans will grind gears whenever you shift into a gear.

Judging from 1st pic - definitely don't see a set screw where it looks like one should be.

Pic 2 is my my set up.  Yes have breaker bar and six point socket on it.

Have soaked everything once with penetrating oil.

Pic 3.          A 4 inch pulley came right off in my hand.

 

Now I'm thinking I have to immobilize the flywheel to go any further. 

But that's not right.  The pulley should just pop off  with a slight bit of pressure . Correct.

 

Thanks for confirming cloth covered belt.  I know the one I have isn't quite right.

Just wanted to see if I could get the tractor to move

Still working on belt guard.  Need that and exhaust guard. Looking for reproductions.

Planning on using rj with a blade just to clear  light snow.

It might not "pop right off" since it's rusted on there. Use an impact gun for turning the puller if you have one. Sometimes knocking it back on and pulling it off (repeat if necessary) will help loosen it all up.

 

Also, that pulley I posted a link for is not right because of this spec

Belt Type A (1/2") Datum Diameter 1.90"

The 1/2 inch belt (type A) will ride lower in the groove of that pulley and would be equal to using a smaller OD pulley. Find a cast or stamped steel pulley 2.5 D for a 1/2" belt. Don't use one of the pot metal pulleys. They're made for lower hp electric motors.

You have a good setup with your puller.

However looking at this picture there is a lot of rust.

if you have a dremel with a wire brush or just a small wire brush clean in that groove between the pulley and the shaft. 

soak it with penetrating oil every day for a week.

Then put your puller back on just like you had it

Tighten the puller up tight, smack the end of the puller with a hammer

Tighten the puller again and repeat

Hadn't thought of the impact gun. I'll give it a try - back and forth.

 

The impact gun is going to take some practice.

The penetrating oil - oddly enough - has made the puller tough to work with

This is looking like it's going to require more patience then I'm generally used to having.

Thanks for the timeline I can re-adjust my expectations

And thanks for confirming setup. I'll work the groove between the pulley and shaft this week.

 

At the moment I've tightened it pretty good by hand and I'll just leave it like that this week.

I thought you needed to save the pulley to reuse it.    If you can’t get it off with a puller try cutting the pulley the length of the key way with a saw or cutoff wheel VERY carefully .  Then spit it with a chisel . Done it many times

Sonof...  pulley came off last night.  Thanks all.

Same old story -  first time you do something it's a little dicey.

May go the 2 groove route on the new pulley so at least I have the option of mower deck should I ever come across one.

Try this for a new pulley but double check the dimensions before ordering.

Clean the shaft up with emery cloth and used anti seize and a new 1/4" key when installing.

Wallfish any chance you had any pics of the pulley setup and / brake clutch setup from that model shown in original post, I'm trying to work through mine right now .

Take it you finally got that old pulley off.

Check out this thread for the pedal brake/clutch assembly

Use a 29" belt by 1/2" wide The idler pulley goes on top of the belt loop. Do you have a belt guard? If not you will need something to support the belt loop around the engine pulley so it can slip / clutch. Otherwise it grinds gears.
